I need two fillings in my teeth. One is in a hole that I can feel. The other is to replace a filling I already have. Both teeth are very painful to bite on and the one that already has the filling tastes really bad when I suck on it. I believe it might need root canal. The problem is I cant have the treatment normally because it freaks me out the drill. I was supposed to be sedated under local but I've found out I'm pregnant and can't have it done. The reason their so bad is because I've left it off for so long. I do use a fluride toothpaste and mouth wash and floss but what else could I do to slow down the decay process?

Rinse your mouth with a saltwater solution; salt is a disinfectant and it sounds like that bad taste is an infected tooth. Putting toxins in your system by swallowing saliva from the tooth can't be good for either you or your baby. Talk to your dentist about this too.

Please go back and try to have the treatment without having the sedation. There's a possibility that at any point these teeth could give you real toothache....then you'll have to have treatment - and it'll be more stressful for you and harder for the dentist to treat.
I know it must be very difficult to overcome your fear. However, the noise of the drill is one of the easier phobias to deal with in a dental surgery - you can take a personal stereo or mp3 player which you can wear during the treatment - this will help to drown out the sound. It may not be completely effective but does help.
I have 16 years experience being a Dental Nurse and I know how terrifying facing your fears can be....I see it every day..... the dental team is fully trained to help you deal with your phobia.
When you hear the drill in your mouth remember that the dentist is only taking away very small amounts - even though it can seem like they are drilling away for ages. You will be completely numb and wont feel any pain during the treatment.
Your dentist should be very understanding to your fears and will be concerned that they are making you feel as comfortable as possible.
In the meantime - keep the teeth as clean as possible with your toothbrush, using a fluoride toothpaste. Rinse out regularly with warm salt water....and get on the phone to make an appointment. Take someone with you on the day for moral support.....good luck, be brave....and once it's all over - you'll be so proud of yourself!

You will need root canal treatment unfortunately. I had the same problem with one of my teeth. You'll have to avoid all sugary sweets/drinks and food if you want to slow down the decaying process but once you've had the baby you must get it treated. As someone said, speak to your dentist. Maybe he can come up with a temporary solution. I'm like you and I've a phobia about dentists but they're a lot better than they used to be as technology has moved on but in the longrun you will feel better for it if you get them fixed. Plus bad teeth equal bad breath!

since you are pregnant you cant do anything till the baby is born the most a dentist can do is clean them. i had the same situation nad i ended up getting 3 root canals. they are a waste of time one tooth disintegrated within 6 months and another is almost gone too. its been only less than 2 years since i got them done in the first place and it took over 6 months for insurance approval. if tehy do need to be root canaled then your best bet would be to just get them pulled. no one that i know has ever gotten a root canal to last over 3or4 years.

The decay will only get worse and you will have toothache and you won't want to be dealing with that when your baby arrives. See your dentist - he will advise you what the best thing is to do.
