This is a legal contract that you are entering. Most contracts require witnesses to your signature.
There are some places that require witnesses, there are some that do not. It is still required by the county I am in even tho' the state has deemed it otherwise. Until this county catches up with the legislation, I will continue to have witnesses sign the license.

I think it's become a custom now but back in the old days it might have been good to have someone say they were there and saw the wedding take place, there were no photographs & people may not have had a reception for many reasons. remember eye witness was about the only thing they had for evidence in our not too distant history.

You need a witness when you get married because it's the law. I suppose it's so that you can prove that you were legally married.

You can get a confidential marriage and then you do not need a witness.
