I am bi racial. My mom is caucasian and my dad is african american. Ever since 8th grade I have been relaxing my hair or wearing braids. I just took out my braids today and I have a medium sized afro. I was wondering if I should keep my hair like this and let it grow or if I should relax it again. I am a senior in high school and of course have to face criticism and stuff. Most of the other african american girls at my school either relax their hair or wear braids, i would be the only one with a small afro. So can I get some advice please?

If you like your afro and think it's pretty, you whould wear it like that. Don't worry about what anyone else thinks about it. You may even start a trend. I have an a.a. friend who looks stunning with her hair in an afro.Be a leader.

I personally think that a small fro would be cute. You have to keep in mind your face shape and size. I'm not saying this to be rude, but if you have a very round face (maybe a little overweight) , a small fro may not look cute on you. If you are very thin, then it will look cute (in my opinion) because it would be very similar to having a pixie cut (a real short hairdo that you curl.... like Angela Bassett did in "Waiting to Exhale").

I'd consider your face shape, face size, and how you personally feel about it and how you feel about yourself. Confidence is the key. I know that since you're a high-schooler, you are going to want to fit in with everyone, which is neither good nor bad. But, if you are confident people aren't going to tell you if they dislike it. They will tell you that it's cute all the time though. And, who knows? You may start a trend.

For the person who said in the first comment that her life sucks, that was pretty rude. This young lady came here for advice, not for you to bash her. It's probably people like you that are making her second guess herself.

I personally would consider straightening it again, but stop braiding it. Those heavy braids break your hair soooooo much, so it never really grows. grow it out and make all those girls jealous! And in the meantime, wear it either in a half-fro or use a hot iron to straighten it out and curl it in a cute pixie do. Now you have options!

Good luck! :-)

I think it is very sad to say this but as long as you are in high school I would go with the flow. It ain't right - it ain't good - but it's true. When you get in collage you can be your own sweet self. But in high school - don't matter if it's your hair or your clothing or your shoes. I would just run at periscope depth and work on getting into collage. High school sucks bad enough. You need to pick your wars.

Honey, do whatever you think you should... Being unique in a school is not bad at all, and I know it can be hard. I coloured my hair and it turned out scarlet-orange. That was very difficult at school for the first few days, but personally, I think that african-american girls with relazed hair are very pretty. Besides I think it would be difficult to brush and wash all that fuzzy hair. Make sure it is not stick-straight. That's not very pretty .Slightly curly, and your tanned skin - and you look like a doll. Good luck.

Small afro's are in now. It really depends on what you look like. You are young enough, If you are pretty you can probably were anything you like. Really short curly hair is in too.

I think small afros are CUTE on girls, honestly. Or on anyone really. As long as it's not out of control.

Rock your natural curls or have braids but don't relax your hair anymore. It is so damaging.

Go natural girl!!! Have you ever heard of India Arie? She is one of the most beautiful african-americans I have ever laid eyes on...and she would tell you that "you are not your hair, you are not your skin, you are the soul that lies within". Be you!!! And if anyone teases you, they are either suffering from low self-esteem or they are jealous, and either way you are better off without them!!!!

:)
