On September 11, 2001 the Statue of Liberty was closed to the public due to "upgrading security systems." August 4, 2004, the pedestal was reopened [1] (http://www.nps.gov/stli/reopening/index.html), however the statue itself remains closed. Visitors are subject to restrictions, including personal searches via the use of a device that blows air into clothing to test for traces of chemicals that are associated with explosives.

SECURITY AND SAFETY GUIDELINES:

Visitors to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island must pass through primary security screening (similar to airport security procedures) before boarding the ferry system. As part of security procedures at the park, it is recommended that you include ample time and maintain a flexible schedule to include security screening and boarding the ferry. Please keep in mind that wait times can be several hours, particularly during peak seasons.

Prohibited Items at the Park:

All weapons, including firearms, knives, mace etc., any dangerous items, and any "dual-use" items that could be dangerous are strictly prohibited in the park and on the ferry system. Do not carry any of these type items into the security screening area. Items that are confiscated will not be returned. If you are unsure about an item, please do not bring it.

LARGE* packages, backpacks, suitcases, carry-on luggage and other large parcels will not be permitted on the ferry systems or at Liberty and Ellis Islands. *(Anything that cannot fit into a standard plastic milk crate).

Visitors and their belongings are subject to inspection. The National Park Service appreciates your patience and understanding of these procedures and the additional time that may be required.

Please note that there are no locker storage facilities at the ferry terminals. Lockers, for small items, are available at Liberty Island. Backpacks, strollers, parcels etc. will not be allowed inside the monument. (cameras, handbags, and small personal items are exempt). Please keep in mind that there is no eating, drinking, or smoking inside the National Monument.

A "Time Pass" is needed to enter the monument. All visitors with a time pass must pass through secondary screening on Liberty Island before entering the monument. Time passes are available free from the ferry company with the purchase of a ferry ticket. You can order advance tickets by calling the ferry company at: 1-866-STATUE4 or on-line.

A limited number of time passes are available each day from the ferry company on a first-come, first-served basis.

A handling fee ($1.75 per ticket) is charged for advanced ferry ticket purchases.

If you have any questions regarding security procedures, please contact the park in writing prior to your visit at: National Park Service, Statue of Liberty National Monument, Liberty Island, NY, NY 10004, Attn: Division of Interpretation & Visitor Services; or e-mail.

i was there last november and it is partially closed. after visitors pass through intense security checkpoints, they are not allowed all the way to the top of ms. liberty only to her feet. visitors used to be able to go all the way up to her crown before 9/11. it's still very much worth it to go even if it's not all the way up. the view from there of manhattan is wonderful! we got some great pics too! hope this is helpful.

As of the year 1912, the thing she is holding in her hand has been closed to walk on, as of the attacks of 9/11 the crown was taken away to go up in, the only part you can still walk on is the "ring" around her waist (not really a "ring" it's a ledge people can walk around) and of course, the island itself.

hope this helped

You can't go all the way up to the top, but you can go into the base and I think about halfway up.
