Every single restaurant on Lou's list is excellent and I have been to most of them. However the problem with the list is the extreme diversity between the price ranges, types of food, and style (formal or casual).

You did not specify in your question what you were most interested in. Certainly the dynamics of the occasion will determine that. Are you looking for a causal place to dine before the theater? Carnegie Deli is great. Are you going to propose to a lady? Then Lutuce or Le Cirque is more appropriate.

You may want to retry the question with more specifics to suit your situation. I hope this helps and Good luck!

What is the BEST place to in NY (or the country?)

Le Bernadin.

Without question, the finest food and service in the U.S.
A true dining experience. IF you can afford it.
Number 1 on the ZAGAT list for years- with good reason.
It would be a shame to miss the best dining experience in the country while you are visiting NY.

Per Se is the best (Three Michelin stars, Zagat #1 in NYC), but it's extremely expensive and tough to get a table. If you are looking for something cheaper (but still good), try Gotham Bar and Grill.
