Public schools, especially ones in inner cities are SEVERELY underfunded. I just graduated from an inner city public school system and for the last six years, all I heard was budget cuts, budget cuts, budget cuts! Teachers were given incredibly restrictive quotas on how much paper they can use from the copy machine (meaning overall, they had to give out less hw and quizzes to save paper), they had to buy their own chalk and whiteboard markers, the TVs were 20 years old and never worked, no one was paid fairly which almost resulted in a crippling strike, i had a textbook that was from 1952 and had inaccurate information, i could go on and on.

The problem is the way the funds are distributed. Inner cities have more schools and less money to go around so everything falls apart in these schools. Suburban public schools are clean and adequately stocked because they have more funds. I've been in San Francisco Unified School District for 13 years and I've visited schools in suburbias, such as Santa Cruz, and the differences in the two learning environments are astounding.

I guess if you're asking about public schools, it really depends on where the school is.

I think public schools in America are in pretty good shape...relative to America that is. Americans should open their eyes to the education values and systems of the rest of the world. Public schools are falling behind in this aspect.

For example:
If you are in high school there are ranks such as AP, Honors, Level One, Level Two, etc. It's almost always impossible for a level two kid to study very hard and come into Honors or AP. Honors kids are judged with a different standard than other children.

Public education though, is doing very well in comparison to Private schools. They almost always have the same standards.

can not really speak on public schools in the suburbs as I grew up in the city. From my experience the kids that went to public schools in the cities are ill-prepared to deal with the rigors of college or beyond. Many of the kids in public school are so bored that they no longer pay attention in school. Sometimes kids have great family problems at home like relatives on drugs, fighting parents, violence, or maybe something like no heat or electric or groceries in the house. They get to school, have not eaten anything and they can not concentrate. The teacher ends up dumming everything down to passed the kids with all these problems, meanwhile the normal kids are no longer challenged. They graduate from school with an A average only to get into college and flunk out after a semester or 2 because they thought they had the grades to become a pharmacist or an engineer or something.
No joke, where I am from the kids that went to public school wh did well all dropped out of college after their 2nd year because they could nto handle the competition of those who went to city magnets, honors schools, private and suburban schools.
I went to an honor school and sometimes for certain classes we did not have school books so the teachers would just photocopy enough for us to learn from. we put on school plays and did not have any costumes or props. This one science class I took in highschool was the same exact book and edition as the one my mom took over 20 years prior. It is a shame

The highschool I went to was great. We at least had some good funding, unlike a lot of schools in the US now a days. I really wish we had a president who cared about the schools, instead of one who says he does.

I think it's in bad shape. A high school diploma is now worthless since they give them to pretty much everyone. The only way to not pass high school now is to not attend.

I survived it, so I guess it's not that bad. Two plus two equals three, right?
