It is rare to find a black atheist, but I feel like I am getting pecked at since black christians are REALLY religious. More so than white christians.

Atheists of any color are the least trusted minority in the United States; we're where the gays and lesbians were until they began to demand their rights.

I suppose black atheists are even more vulnerable because there are fewer of them. Also, the black community feels a need to stand together, so any dissident voice is perceived as a threat to the community.

The churches were instrumental in the civil rights movement and they want to hold onto their members; that's their agenda and it shouldn't surprise you. I'm sure you have every right to feel persecuted.

For what it's worth, I have nothing but sympathy for your plight and admiration for your courage. And I know of at least one other black atheist, Reginald Finley -- he's an "out" atheist and he lives in Georgia, of all places. You can hear his radio program here:

You may be a small minority, but you're not alone.

According to sociologist Rodney Stark, atheists tend to be found in a narrow range of social and economic strata: in the university and intellectual world and in certain professions. Today they make up a significant part of the governing class. (By contrast, believers are found throughout the social spectrum).

With a few exceptions like Cornell West, Malcom Gladwell, and John McWhorter, fewer black people occupy those ivory tower positions. This will hopefully be changing soon.

I can only guess it is rare to find an openly atheist black person for the reasons you state in your question. Can't really tell what they actually believe though

the black community has a strong bond with the church,,,the white community is uch more fragmented and secular,,,,black people can get away with having religious and racist biases as opposed to whites,,,if an atheist is persecutes by whites the civil rights lawyers start seeing buisness

When I signed on to have a Mysace account, I put that I'm interested in making friends with atheists. My first atheist friend on Myspace was a black guy from Cincinnati.

Same for mexicans and it is because statistically both groups are poorer and less educated than whites and religiosity is linked inversely to both.

When they were slaves - they were pushed into Christianity to further "tame the wild man".

Instead of rebelling, they kept the religion going......and yes - they do it better than the whites who pushed them into it!!
