Since the batteries popped out you obviously damaged the battery compartment door. The lens is stuck out because there was no more power to bring it back in. There is a switch activated by the battery compartment door that tells the camera when it is closed. That has probably been damaged. This may not be a big fix depending on what make and model camera you have.

You have sized up the situation correctly. Now, the question is how to explain to your parents that you had their camera in the bathroom. I'd suggest that you tell them you dropped it on the sidewalk outside when you were trying to take a picture of the beautiful fall foliage.

You dropped the camera. And you'r wondering what might be wrong? I bought a new one Digital, I dropped it, and the corner of the lens broke.
