Try any way you like. A tanning bed gives you more radiation in a shorter time, so it will change the color of your skin better. It will also spread the radiation over your skin in a more complete saturation.
You did realize that the UV rays that give you a "tan" are actually ultra violet radiation waves from the sun or the bulbs, right? You did know that a tan is a form of radiation burn, right? You did realize that people get skin cancer from this radiation, right?
How many people would want to tan if we called it by the actual name - RADIATION BURN -

Stop tanning, as this is posted in the Singles and Dating section, if you are tanning to attract the opposite sex, its not worth it. If you really want a guy to be interested in your because of your "phat" tan then that may be an expectation or desire of his and ultimatly long term tanning is a bad thing and a focus on things that just are 'yunno so like un-important'. But thats my two cents (and definatly not worth said value).
Maybe pay attention to your diet. Tomato, pomegranate, salmon, green tea and dark chocolate are all implicated in bolstering tolerances to the sun. Heavy anti-oxidents, and makeup also can prevent you from getting a rippin' tan. Avoiding eating these things can help, but seriously bakin' increases the appearance of age, dries out the skin, can cause edema (swelling), increases chances of cancer and ultimatly is not worth it.

Take it from an expert, to get a good tan (and keep it) the key is to stay moisturized. If your skin isn't moisturized then it will take you twice as long to get tan. Just lotion ever day after you shower and before you tan. You will be very pleased with the results.
