Hi,

I want to specialize in a trade such as bricklaying but would like to know first if there are schools where they actually teach you. I know one can learn something by directly working on the field but that could take a few years as a laborer first.

Home Depot can give you basics. i mean BASICS. I was lucky to be born in a family where my two uncles are in construction. i learned how to reroof an entire house (cedar shakes to composite), how to lay a foundation for a house, how to frame rooms, how to sheetrock, etc.

Go to a community college or technical one. Or befriend someone at work or somewhere who can do it. Watch what they do and ask questions (not enough to annoy), and try to get involved

It takes time and dedication but well worth it in the end.To become a plumber in ontario you have to get signed up by a company to be an apprentice and put in 9000 hours of on the job training. You also need three terms of school at 2 months each time. You start off at 40% of a licenced plumbers wage then 50 60 70 and 80 for each 1800 hour block then you stay at 80% until you wright your cfq.The wage of a licenced plumber in the union is about 40 dollars an haboutught 25 for a non union worker so yes it is well worth it i am a plumber anthere'ses always work more than we can keep up with it just depends on what area of plumbing your working in.

Try a vocational school like Lincoln Tech.
Honestly, you may want tp look at another trade such as HVAC or electrician. My brother was a mason for 18 years and he finally got tired of sitting home all winter plus it is brutal on your hands and body. He works with me now. I've been doing HVAC for 28 years and it is a constantly changing trade. I am an old timer in my trade. Masonry is always the same. Plus you have a quicker chance of getting ahead because the amount of skilled labor out there is sparce. No one wants to do real work anymore-they all want to sit in front of a computer all day.
There is a real shortage of craftsmen and mark my words - we will be in top demand as the older guys retire.
Good luck and stick to whatever you want to do.

There are certain schools called Vocational Schools (or tech schools). If you are still in high school, then you can simply go to a vocational school instead of a regular high school. Vocational school somewhat serve as a regular high school, but also give you training in certain fields, like carpentry, plumbing, electrical stuff, etc.

Find out if there are unions for those professions in your area/city. There probably are.
