I expect them to put the implements of torture in front of me and leave the room, so that I can stare at them in anticipation. Then he'll give me a novacaine shot and say "This is going to pinch a little bit". It'll make me wince and my eyes will water. Then they'll fill my mouth with cotton, hang a vacuum thing off my lip, and ask me questions like "Where do you work?" (they get their jollies that way). Then they'll put a blinding light in my eyes and start drilling away. Next they'll have me spit tooth fragments into a small, circular sink. I'll drool a combination of blood and saliva all over myself and I'll think "Boy wasn't that a lot of fun!!"

That he or she know what they are doing and do it well.
I have had awful experiences with more than one dentist, but the worst one was friendly and charming, but everytime he did a root canal filling, infection set in much later. It was only when another of his patients, whom I know well, changed dentists and he showed her on X-Ray what a lousy job the initial dentist had made on that root canal, that the rest of us put two and two together. If you have ever had a bad root canal done where the root isn't filled properly and the infection sets in, you will know how painful that is. You claw the walls and floor in agony. In my case, he had done 3 such botched jobs; the first infection had me run to him and beg him to extract the tooth, which I now regret. It was an easy way to stop the terrible pain, and I didn't know it was his fault. He happily extracted the tooth. The other teeth were healed by my new dentist, who is so good and skilled. He showed me that one of them was not only a bad root canal filling, but my jaw bone had been drilled into!
Since then I have heard that there are more victims, and that he was so bad with children, they developed a phobia.
There is talk about suing him, but that is not an easy matter.
Anyway, after such an experience, I must say that my expectations now are that no other dentist will ever abuse patients like he did. Or be deliberately cruel and take their bad moods out on you, as was my case with a female dentist once. They have you at their mercy and we have to trust them and sometimes small mistakes are inevitable, but there are some sadistic butchers out there!

To have this Dr. care about my mouth and it's health. To do the best he can in order to keep all the teeth I can. Respect and listen to my concerns. Not overcharge me and be fair with treatment needed. I expect this Dr. to be professional and honest, don't give me the run around about his opinion with the treatment needed.

To LISTEN to me.
To feel my pain.
To have empathy.
To be professional yet friendly.
To explain everything fully, and offer alternatives if applicable.
To treat me like the individual that I am, rather the next walking mouth through the door...

That he/she is professional. That he/she asks if I have any specific concerns as far as sedation, gas, etc. Must be on time within 15 minutes before I bolt.
