Use Expedia.com and/or Travelocity.com and search for hotels that are NOT on the beach. I stayed in a motel in the village of Lahaini a few years ago and it was away from the water but was nice and had a pool. It was called the Maui Islander, but the last time I was there a few years ago its name had changed.

The last time we were there we stayed at the Kanapalli Beach hotel which was kinda Best Westerny but nice but it was still over $200 a night.

I work for a large hospitality company, so I get great deals on hotels worldwide. If you don't have that option, you have others:
1. Hostels. If you can spend more that's great, but hopefully you will be only using your room for sleeping, Maui is just that beautiful. From $20-50 a night. Would not recommend unless you want to skimp on lodging to save in other areas.
2, Travelocity and name your own price. You can enter the number of stars you want and the price you want to spend and it will match you with a hotel that is available, The downside is you agree to buy based on price and star rating without being able to see the property first.
3. You cannot tell if a place is a dump. Try to find reviews, etc about the property to get feedback from people who have stayed there.
Good luck, and have fun!

Stay in a condo... you can get one in Paia or Kihei for about $95 a night. You will have a 500-600sq ft condo with a full kitchen, small table, TV, air conditioner, couch and one bedroom with a queen size bed. Kihei Kai Nani is a very nice and affordable condo development on Maui that I have stayed at and very much enjoyed.

Use hotels.com, and use their star rating as an indication of how nice they are. This site also provides cheap accomodations.

Then, use tripadvisor.com to read reviews by people who actually stayed there.

have fun in Maui! :)
