just the same as the oil (fat,etc) in your body. The earth is also a body and needs oil for similar reasons, just like water and minerals. How this works biochemically is beyond me, but I think some day we will find out

I"m a christian, and I know no one wants to hear it, but I believe that the oil is there for when God comes back to create the new earth, first he has to cleanse it and to do that he will burn it. The oil will help the whole world to be consumed.

why does it have to have a purpose? Do mosquitos serve a purpose? Maybe some things are just part of nature. As creatures of this earth, we can partake of its treasures, but we should also treat resources and other living beings with respect and not just our selfish desires.
