If your faith says to "do unto others as you would have them do unto you," and your country tortures prisoners on your behalf, how do you respond?

Excellent question. Since my country (the United States) is religiously neutral, I don't have to worry about this, but it's a serious problem with those here whose religion teaches them that this country is, or should be religious (that is, the religious right). It's clear that many and perhaps almost all of them regularly put their religion ahead of their country, which is why you see so much treason among the religious right (for example, Roy Moore).

Since my Christian Faith means more to me than anything, I would have Great Faith in the ability to defend our Country. With Faith and Loyalty, the two words and with full meaning, would be used together to defend America. I Would make sure our prisoners would be treated well under the Geneva agreement. There would be no torture. If the prisoners were being held in America , I would deport them immediately. Back to their homeland. There would be no torture. My Faith would help me to make the right decisions. If that meant defending myself from a killer terrorists, then I would defend and eliminate. War does not always depend on Faith and Loyalty. It is built on survival. God wants the good , people to survive and if that means , kill, then that is what I would do for this Country. A strong , true, loyal faithful soldier would do exactly that.

If I was a Muslim and the Koran forbid me to kill and live in peace, what would I do?

If the Koran told me to kill and torture others would I obey?

I know that I would not be capable of 'torturing' anyone and that is why I am no in such a position to make that decision.

Would I torture someone to save my own child's life, Yes I would.

There are just too many ramifications to your question to simply answer yes or no and really be truthful.

In any event, do you always do unto others.....

The obvious answer for me is my faith. We have no business torturing prisoners. Just because others do this to innocent persons, or guilty persons, is no excuse for this country to do so; Or any other person claiming to be Christian to do so.

God comes first...in all things

the ethics and morals of man are not of God. Man must live in this corrupt mortal world. There are things that are done in this world that are not pleasing to God. But to live in this world and to assure that other will live some of those things must be done. most of those things are "sins"...

A great misunderstanding of sin is that it can keep someone out of Heaven... that is not the case... The only thing the keeps anyone out of Heaven is rejecting God... All who come to God in The way He proscribes will enter heaven... but the sins of the world they have commited will be accounted and will relsult in less reward in Heaven...

I am of The True Christian Faith... If I have to physicaly persuade an enemy, who would cut the heads off of my family, in order to get information that would prevent that, I will do so without hesitation. most espacialy as I have personal evidence, as well as video evidence, that the treats of the enemy are genuine... And that many will suffer and die if the information the enemy is holding is not obtained right now... I do not take such action in the name of God.... unlike my enemy who uses the name of his false God in his torture and killing, and claims his false God aproves of such action... My God will hold me acountable for my actions... and I will have no defence...

It doesn't say if they do it, that gives us reason to do it, read the scripture! It says to do unto others as you would have them do unto you, which means if you do something nasty to some one, don't be surprised if they do it back. Also, I'll fight for my faith any day, it's worth fighting for.

faith then family then country, standing behind your country and what they are doing with prisoners does not compromise faith in my opinion, do un to others and dealing with prisoners in a time of war to me does not work the way you are implying, i would expect the enemy to torture me for some reason or the other, its war bro

Since I am an atheist, I'd have to choose my country in most cases. However, if my country required me to condone torture, I would have to refuse, and do all I could to get my country to end such practices.

For me it is all about Jesus.

As for what our nation does on our behalf , my answer is to pray! Pray for those that are torturing, killing, or harming others! Pray for those that are being tortured, killed or harmed.
