Start at the Mall. Capitol is the eastern point, and there are tours, but you need tickets from a congressional office.
West on the Mall is the National Gallery, both old and new -- if you like art, do not miss it.
Just down the Mall is the Air and Space Museum, which is very cool if you like planes and spacecraft. Wright Brothers, Spirit of St Louis, Apollo capsules, all that sort of stuff.
A little farther is the Smithsonian Castle, which you can tour pretty quick. There is often an interesting exhibit.
Across the street is the Natural History Museum - very good, with the best gems collection this side of the Tower of London.
The National History museum is closed thru Mid 2008.
Straight ahead is the Washington Monument, which you can get tickets for an go to the top. Get there early, as tickets go fast.
Dead ahead is the World War II Memorial, which is cool in its own right. You can walk around it in about 20 minutes and catch the highlights.
West end of the Mall is the Lincoln Memorial. To the north is the Vietnam Memorial, to the south the Korea Memorial.
Southeast about four blocks is the FDR Memorial -- if you are a fan, visit. It's nicely designed.
You could devote two days just to the mall, easily.
But there are lots of other cool places. The FBI has a good tour, which you need tickets for; the Spy Museum is interesting; the National Building Museum is in one of the coolest buildings in Washington.

It took me a half a day to do a walking tour of the major free sites in Wahsington - White House, Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, Vietnam War Memorial, Korean War Memorial, The Mall with a view to the Capitol Building.
The Smithsonian is a collection of museums and is free to get in all of these museums. You need to figure out exactly what you want to see because to do the major museums thoroughly and comfotably will take the best part of a day per museum. Personally, I went to see the Hope Diamond in the National History Museum (this museum is definitely worth a visit). I also went to see the Wright Flyer in the aviation museum (another musuem worth a visit if interested in aviation).

My very own widespread is the national Gallery - it has paintings from all eras. yet whilst paintings isn't your ingredient, you will possibly be able to easily like the organic historic previous Museum (fossils, rocks, etc) or the yank historic previous Museum. The Air and area Museum is exciting, extremely if there are little ones on your team. extremely some the museums are unfastened. in case you choose to work out the monuments, they are all interior walking distance from one yet another. set aside a pair hours to stroll around the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, the Jefferson Memorial, and the monuments for the Korean and Vietnam wars. you will get a excursion of the Capitol (lasts a pair of hours) in case you call your Congressperson in simple terms before time and request tickets. My mothers and fathers got here around final spring and this exchange into their widespread ingredient that we did.

The Smithsonian Institute and all it's attractions, the Main Mall, including all the buildings along it's path, and the Capitol building. Contact your state senator a few weeks in advance and get free passes for a tour or a pass to sit in on the senate gallery. That's a full 2 days (or 3)
