I have hormonal breakouts. I've used the over the counter products, avon, clinique, Mary Kay and Proactive. They either didn't work or they had a horrible chemical smell to them.
I am now using Arbonne's acne line, Clear Advantage with great results. Not only does it work, but it doesn't dry out my skin and there's no chemical smell to it. I have actually become a consultant for Arbonne to get the discount on the products.
I'm listing the 4 step system Arbonne recommends for acne.
If you send me an email via my website, I'd be happy to send you some before and after pictures that real people have sent in.
Arbonne Clear Advantage Acne Wash- Soothing, oil-free, deep pore cleanser unclogs pores and cleanses away dirt. Medicated with acne-fighting, prescription quality salicylic acid. Active ingredients are deposited directly into the pore, helping to clear blemishes and prevent new ones from forming.
Arbonne Clear Advantage Refining Toner- Alcohol-free, oil free toner helps balance and calm skin while removing excess oils. Enhanced with alpha hydroxy acids to gently and effectively remove dead skin cells. Skin is left clean, soothes, hydrated and refreshed.
Arbonne Clear Advantage Acne Lotion- Mild, oil free lotion with acne fighting salicylic acid penetrates pores to destroy blemishes causing bacteria, improving problem skin. Soothing and calming botanical agents help to heal and hydrate skin.
Arbonne Clear Advantage Skin Support- A uniquely developed dietary supplement to support the skin from the inside out. A combination of acne-fighting nutrients, such as vitamins, minerals and amino acids, plus botanicals used for centuries to improve skin conditons.

Firstlly I always like to go and find the root of the problem.
Have you seen your dr. about this yet? Have you had any blood tests, etc?
There are many causes of acne and they different for both men and women.
I don't know how old you are or what other medical conditions you have but it is always best to see what MAY be causing the acne. In that way, you can treat it better.
For me, when I was in my early 20's I developed acne around
my chin and jaw line. It was so severe I saw a skin specialist.
He put me on a low dose of antiobiotics, and over time, my skin cleared up.
I used a very mild soap (natural and not drying), mild astringent, and mild moisturiser.(neotrogena products)
I kept out of the sun as well and always wore a hat.
I basically ate a good, balanced diet and got lots of fresh air.
Drinking 8-10 glasses of water a day also helped.
Zinc supplements are also good(but in small doses).
I stayed on the antiobiotics for a year or so, and gradually the acne just disappeared.
I still get the occasional spot now and then and just treat it with a mild astringent.
Let me say - you don't need to buy expensive over-the-counter products. Don't fall for the gimics.
The acne condition is within and needs to be treated within and then topical(using the right products).
My dr. did prescribe a tropical cream to apply to my skin(which really helped).
- health conditions - sometimes it can be hormone related - if you suffer with PCOCS(polycystic ovarian syndrome) you may have too much testosterone and this may cause you to have some acne. A dr. can test for this(only if you are a female).
I wish you well and believe with the right treatment, your acne will improve significantly.
It is always best to seek medical attention, in my opinion(first)

Dry and/or greasy skin due to poor oil composition of the skin. Thick greasy oils clog pores, lack of oil leads to dryness and irritation. You need thin oils to moisturize while dissolving and clearing gunk in your poors. Try fish oil or seafood. 2 tsp fish oil a day or 4 servings of seafood a week. Stick it out for at least 2 months; it will take a long time to replace all your oil. Any effect after 1-2 days is temporary or random; so even if it makes you break out a little at first, you haven't given it a full try yet.
In the short term you can wash and moisturize well, but that will only go so far. Plus excessive washing can be drying and excessive moisturizing can be clogging. Use a small amount of a light moisturizer, made with oil not jelly or grease. Often that means soybean oil or mineral oil. Mineral oil means mined from the ground. So soybean oil is usually better, though mineral oil won't cause too much harm. Clean with soap and water, not a harsh acne cleanser. Even then they only work so well. So you really need the seafood.
Antibiotics aren't really good for bacteria long term, they'll come back in force after. Short term they may help. After you get off them find some kefir with acidophilus listed first or 2nd to replace the friendly bacteria they destroyed. Studies show less illness when you have these bacteria, even outside the stomach in places such as the lungs and elsewhere. You want friendly bacteria to fill the void when the antibiotics stop, not harmful ones.
In the short term you might also try 100,000+ iu retinol vitamin A (a megadose, and too much for normal use) or one of the acne drugs that is similar to retinol vitamin A. It's some minor harm to your organs, but it helps against bacteria on your skin. At least it doesn't have the other long term drawbacks to your skin that antibiotics and many scrubs do.
If you would like to learn how to treat your acne permanently and regain your health and wellbeing, without drugs, without typical acne treatments, and without any side effects, then this will be the most important letter you will ever read.

Eat well, drink plenty of water; don't smoke or drink to excess, get some exercise -- but those work for most things, yes.
Re. ProActiv, see:

For severe acne, Accutane is about the only thing that'll be really effective. Somewhat less severe: Retin-A. Mild: salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide creams. Alpha-hydroxy acids can also help; ditto facial scrubs. Avoid stuff that's heavily advertised; instead, ask your doctor or pharmacist to recommend the best products -- there are over-the-counter treatments in drugstores that do work, and the best ones are usually the ones you rarely hear about -- they don't need to advertise, since so many dermatologists send their patients off to buy them.
Topical and oral antibiotics don't seem to work as well as they should for most people. Avoid gimmicky stuff, too. Use a liquid cleanser rather than a bar of soap, and (very sparingly) an oil-free light moisturiser.
If you're female, the birth control pill can sometimes help -- you may need to experiment with a few kinds, though.

Those containing benzoyl peroxide which is a drying agent. I use Preparation H on big red zits (no kidding, reduces the redness and swelling) toothpaste also works some and a prescription cream from a dermatologist that acts from the inside out and prevents scarring. I personally would steer clear of any oral remedies (Accutane etc.) as they Accutane can cause Crohn's (worse problem than acne).

OHOHOHOOH GOSH--my biggest problem I had to face for years....let me share my experience.
I used to try Clearasil...it kinda worked. But ended up over drying my face...so I kinda still broke out.
I then tried St. Ives peach scrub...which I usually used to exfoliate my skin with...that works...but the specific acne one didn't work for me...no results.
THEN I tried Neutrogena....that cleared my skin up...but of course-you gotta always remember to moisturize your skin with a good SPF 15 lotion like Oil of Olay.
But after awhile...it wasn't enough. I felt like my skin was just learning to build up an immunity to everything I used. It was frustrating. The biggest thing I learned through all this is:
A) you gotta know WHAT makes you break out. Like, for me-it was staying up late at night, being stressed out, or not washing my face before I go to bed or when I wake up.
B) Take what starts it---like lack of sleep--and start sleeping right. Stop staying up.
C) Know that drying your skin with too much alcohol in the cleansers isn't good for your skin. Always moisturize and exfoliate every so often--
I tried proactive....a world reknown acne killer out there. It seems to work for my sister, boyfriend and best friends...heck-even the celebrities, try that. But I'm allergic to that main ingredient of theirs...Benzoyl Peroxide.
Anyway-this is stretching too long. But I'm still maintaining my clear skin now...water helps SO MUCH....!
I use Neutrogenas foam cleanser by the way. Then after-I use Neutrogenas face pads and wipe the rest of the gritty dirt from my pores too. Then put lotion on-Oil of olay, or something. And my skin has been clearer than ever

Proactiv....I am sure you have seen the commercials or ad's. My advise would be try it. My brother used it years ago and still on occassions uses it now. He suffered from severe acne and went to doctors etc and nothing helped. He started using it (as directed) very important and it worked.
