Mankind was created in the "image" of God, not the other way around. Image does not refer to the outward appearance but to the similitude of God who is in being an intelligent and moral entity who experiences complex emotions like love.
Genesis 1:26 Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth."

He does not only look like a man, He is an exalted man. Does it not make perfect sense that since we are created in HIS image, that we look like him...we have legs so He must also.
