can I fill in my name and cash it? the stub is attached still and there is no indication of who the purchaser was. is it somehow tied to the purchaser (like through the 11-digit number)? There is nothing written in the payee/sender fields.

ok--stop with the "larceny in your heart"...did you see that half of the question was "there is no name on the sender, can it be found using the number?" i called the hotline number to see, but it was just an automated system.

None of the places that the others have mentioned (including Western Union locations and Walmart) will cash a WU money order. Without being willing to put it in a bank account, you are basically SOL.

Well, I suppose if there is an amount printed on it, It could be allowed? Chances are it has been reported missing or stolen. So it would be your choice to try. The number on it has a reference file at the point of purchase. The purchasers usually sign a log with their info so if found or need be can be returned or canceled.
If it has no amount, putting any figure on it you choose could be considered a number of things, theft, fraud and the likes not to mention immoral because it would come at the cost of the purchaser, seller, or whom ever pays out the money.
If it isn't yours I say forget about it or turn it in.

A money order is usually payable to the bearer (whoever has physical possession of it). That said, the number can be traced to the office where it was purchased. I don't know if Western Union can trace to purchaser if they paid cash.

If the receipt is there, blank, like the money order itself, it's a free for all. The purchaser is OBLIGATED to complete the money order with purchaser's and payee's names or lose recourse for refund if lost or stolen. There is probably no way to link a money order back to the purchaser unless they kept the receipt (only possible way would be if they used an ATM card to buy it).

First of all this is just like finding $100 bill on the ground. It can't be traced to the rightful owner. It's a Western Union money order and they sell those at gas stations, corner stores pony kegs and everywhere in between. It is not stealing. If it was a bank money order then yes, you could go to the bank and they could return it to it's owner. Make it out to yourself and deposit it into your account. Be happy that you found it, you obviously need it more than the person that lost it, if they needed it they wouldn't have lost it.
And for everyone above me who ansered this differently you should be ashamed. If it were cash you'd have no problem taking it. It's not like she said she saw it fall out of someones pocket, waited for them to leave and then took it.
Enjoy it!!!!

Yes you can. I don't know the amount of the money order! But they can charge you for stealing it. Are you ready to do some time?

go to the western union office and find out whose it is, they can trace it, and someone must reallly need the money.
Put yourself in their shoes.
