How do you promote activism? Majority of the young adults i know of prefer to remain ignorant in political issues, refuse to get involved, or are just politically apathetic. I assume that this is due to lack of interest, fear (oppositions of government regarded as dissidents) or the culture cultivated by the government where the youth and students should only read their schools books and focus on nothing else. This is in Malaysia.

In order to get youths or anyone under the age of 30 more interested in politics is to educate them as to how it affects them. If there were more discussions on issues that affect them then they would be more interested. It would also take realistic education as to how and why elected officials do their jobs. Activism doesn't work until it affects the financial bottom line of government.

I think you should start with a small group and take on a cause that has potential for success. Like a local ordinance to allow, or not allow smoking for example (just a hypothetical example).

I, for example, have been involved in trying to get Universal health care in the United States. I am only involved in it on a local and state level. If we could get our state to consider it, other states would probably follow. That is the hope. Start it locally and hope it spreads nationally.

If people see the problem as overwhelming, they tend to be apathetic. Apathy and fear of failure are probably the two biggest deterrents.

Start small in your cause, have some success, and interest will grow.

In the United States, the right to life movement (which I'm against) has been highly successful in promoting activism. Their methods would be interesting to study.

Well Nia, it's the same situation here in America. Apathy rules. The kids here only care about their ipods and having sex. There is absolutely no social conciousness at all. What we need is a resurgence of the 1960s activism. But one has to care before one will get involved.
