Daisy, I believe that when I die I will simply cease to exist. That doesn't bother me at all. It serves to make this life more precious, seeing as how it is all the time I will ever have.

It's a thought that I'm quite comfortable with, yes.

Everything living dies. Everything dead rots. Humans are part of nature, so why should we be exempt from any natural process?

I can find no good reason to believe in the existence of any deity, and I think it's silly to believe that some part of us could survive after the physical body expires. The human spirit -- or soul, if you prefer -- is a product of the mind, which is a product of the brain, which cannot survive the death of the body.

In short: A few minutes after my heart stops beating, my brain will die for lack of oxygen and then whatever was me will be gone.

I have no difficulty accepting this.

Good question.

That's pretty much it. I don't see a plausible way for an afterlife to be able to exist, and I can't see how there could be a soul. None of this would matter if we only could detect the soul or afterlife, but we can't do this, either (near-death experiences can be explained with various sensations in the brain).

So to me, it seems most reasonable (but perhaps less comforting) that we live our lives, and then die. A comforting thought is, perhaps, that eternal life is a terrifying thought. All good things must eventually end.

I believe that after you cease to exist that is the most peaceful way to go. You can't be scared, angry. or resentful of anything because you simply can't think.

I don't believe in souls let alone reincarnation. Humans are nothing special.

A very comfortable thought just as long as I know my children are alive and well.

Unlike most atheists I believe in the existence of a soul and reincarnation but I just don't believe in a personal God.

I'm an atheist. I believe my soul will go into Earth orbit and touch other souls.

I'm thinking reincarnation is a strong possibility.

I think the soul is bound by the laws of physics and has mass and thats why I think it will be in Earth orbit, dancing in the moonlight, touching your soul, remember this moment you read this answer, the feeling, your soul will bump into mine, and you will have a memory of this connection between you and me.

Thats what I believe, as an atheist.

yes...because imagine if you get knocked out..you don't know what the heck happened when you come around.
You don't exist therefore, you are not worrying, freaking or panicking...you just are nothing.
I find the whole god thing to be a little like believing in Santa Claus, your parents tell you there is one, but then later you realize. It's just in this case, your parents still believe.

Christians and other religionists are comfort seekers who have found this comfort only in mythological ideas, and in solutions that need constant reinforcement, as each of these systems are clearly flawed and contrary to the believer's own common sense. Those of us that have learned to live with uncertainty are in fact the most comfortable in our skins as paradoxically our uncertainties involve less fear and doubt than your certainties do.

We believe that's it. We stop existing entirely. And i do find that a comforting thought. It's in keeping with all the laws of science. I began, I lived, I ended, in keeping with every other known phenomenon.

Its the only thing that really makes sense to me of all the theories of dying.

When I die, my body will return to the earth that has fed and raised me. I will decompose back to minerals and chemicals that will feed plants, that will feed animals, who in thier turn will die and decompose. I will still be part of the great cycle of life.

No, I do not believe in reincarnation. I am just a compostion of various chemicals.
