What's a favorite character from the books your students like? They'd be tickled to have their teacher come as a character from a book. With a little adapting, it could also work for the party. Of course, for the kids, there's always a Christmas tree. Wear green and put on every piece of jewelry you own, all at once. Add a few inexpensive Christmas tree ornaments, and you're all set. Then you could put most of your time and effort into a costume for Friday, if you don't think the Christmas tree would be appropriate for your friends' party. If you own nothing green, go hit the thrift stores. Halloween stuff is pretty much gone by now, but no one is touching the green clothes!

A scarecrow costume could be put together pretty easily.Jeans or overalls and an old flannel shirt will work nicely. A straw hat, yarn hair and a little face paint and you're all set. And, for school, it should be suitable. Lots of schools are frowning on anything vaguely satanic, so witches and ghosts are usually out. I would definitely stick with something that would be more of a "harvest season" costume. Avoiding complaints from parents is always a plus.

My suggestion is fairly inexpensive. I have given it on YA on numerous occasions. It's not very fancy, but it will do- and it's tasteful and comfortable!
Go as a construction worker:
1) Hard hat (very cheap at HomeDepot or Lowe's)
2) Red reflector vest
3) Tool belt
You could wear a flannel shirt and jeans/boots if you are allowed in school.
I wore this at my workplace (a public library). I usually don't like dressing up, but this was an o.k. costume and I recycle it off and on.
My husband wore it to his workplace (a university library). He got "Village People" jokes all day. So, he gave it up after a while! ;)

Yahoo has a site, it is on my home page right now. Lots of choices for adults, especially if you are a little crafty, or can sew. Check out the ABC news video on Halloween costumes, too.
I liked the daisy, it could be adapted for an adult, and is g-rated, just right for a school event. All it is is some fabric and some foam.
Lots of sites online could help. Just type in halloween costume.
If you have black pants, and a white or brightly colored shirt, pirate is good, or pirate wench.

Yes, simply borrow a suit from someone, use some eyliner to create side burns, a plastic black hat from Party City, and you've got the Blues Brother Himself!! Also, consider getting another teacher to dress the same to be a pair.

go as a road. Get some black sweats or tights and a top. Get some wide yellow tape, and stick it to the outfit right down the middle.
Add some roadkill for flare.

Yes the cat, and you can wear conservative black clothes to school, then a cute black dress or something else tight for the Friday evening.

When I was teaching, my standards were either a cat, or a doctor (had a scrubs top and bottom, got a mask to hang around my neck, made badge...)
