She already keeps her room immaculate and makes her bed. What else can she do around the house? She is always asking to help out.

Please have your 6 yr old help you cook and bake. It helps them for a lifetime. She needs to learn basics like scrambled eggs, mac and cheese, steamed veggies. Let her help in the kitchen at least 3-4 times per week. It does not have to be every meal.

Also she is old enough to sweep, help with sorting laundry, mopping, dusting and feeding the pets. If you get them started young they feel self-worth and they have better self esteem through out life. They feel like they contributed to the household. They may complain at time but it helps in the long run.

Good Luck

I say let her help you choose some chores. If you give her the chance to be a part of the process she may become more willing to help. Maybe you can come up with a list of jobs she will do and a reward for doing some of them. Some things should just be her job with no reward like keeping up on her room and such. I think good jobs for 12 year olds include Helping make dinner Laundry dusting taking out the garbage recyclables dishes carrying in groceries unloading groceries vacuuming Id ask her what chooses she would like to have and take away things when she doesn't complete them correctly. Take away having a friend over, TV time and so on. Just make sure you are realistic about how well and how many chores she has. She is still a kids too. :) Jenn Association of professional nannies Treasurer Nanny to three for 14.5 yrs!!! in NY

Whatever you are doing let her help. She can dry and put up dishes. fold and put away towels and blankets, vacuum (my 4 1/2 year olds love this) sweep or just hold the dust pan, mop or take a towel and dry the floors when you are done. She can wipe things off like the table or fingerprints on the doors, fridge, etc. Let her help you cook and set the table. My step-daughter's regular chore at that age was to keep her room, her bathroom and the hallway in between clean.

My daughter is 6 too. Basically she can help with anything and I let her, unless it involves cleaning chemicals like window cleaner.
Oh and the toilet, Id rather she didnt bother with that.

She does an even better job than myself sometimes when she does things!.

She loves when we cook together most of all out of everything and it has helped her to learn kitchen saftey and measuring etc.

She vaccuums ( doesnt mop yet though), makes beds, waters plants, dusts, folds clothes, washes dishes ( mostly the forks, spoons) wearing her little rubber gloves, wipes down cabinets, empties the washing machine and puts it all in the dryer, empties the dryer...the list goes on and on...now I am embarrassed cause everyone probably thinks I use my daughter as a slave..lol.

A lot of the above suggestions are great. I worked as a nanny, and, for whatever reason, those kids LOVED dusting and sweeping. And almost all kids I know LOVE to help cook. I would ask your daughter what *she* would like to help you with. Kids can be strange...maybe she'll get her jollies from vacuuming or dragging out the recycables or whatever. I used to love stacking hay and weeding the garden. I was a freak, I know.

My gram was sneaky that way...she'd wait for us to literally BEG her to let us do something, and she'd say, "OK, but if you don't do as good a job as I do, then you can't do it anymore."
Of course, within a week, we'd proven we could do it...and then we were stuck with it :-p

My 2 almost 3 year old loves to help me fold laundry so we can be together more. When I fold the towels she will do the wash cloths. So thats always fun! She also loves to help me dust.

I would let her pick one thing she could help with a day she could always change it every day either getting dishes out of the dish washer, sweeping, dusting, sorting laundry with you or helping you fold or hang it up.. There are a lot of things you two could do together..

My cousin is six and she sets the table. So that would probably be a good thing to start with. Then move onto taking out the trash and sweeping the kitchen.

emptying the little trash cans around the house. Help folding clothes, dusting any other small chores. Good to teach them early.

Wow., Lucky you. All Ive been doing all morning is trying to get my 2 olders sons ages 7 and 9 to clean up the house . You can get her to help fold clothes, or hang them up. Also put dishes away, if you trust her with them.

She could help you wash the fresh fruits and veggies, and set the table for dinner.

Let her know how much you appreciate her efforts and thank her for doing such a good job. It seems like you have a great daughter so she must have a pretty wonderful mom. God bless your family.
