Give him time. He is in a new surrounding and he is older so he has probably been through some trama. Give him a nice quiet safe place to stay away from the noise and clutter of the house. Keep his bowls of food and water close but not too close and his litter box fairly close. Talk to him in a baby sort of way. Keep reassuring him that he is safe and that you will protect him (like his mother did). Cats associate one person in the house as his mother replacement, it could be you (male or female). Pet him and call his name. Get him cuddly toys even little cotton puffs from the fabric store. Always leave his cage door open. Allow him to come out when you are not home to explore (as long as he is litter box trained).
His world will first be that cage then that room and then he will gradually take over the whole house. Wont be too long. My kitten was 4 mos old and it took her 2 weeks but a 2 yr old should only be a week or so.

Good luck

my cat (now 14) was very scared when I got her. She spent 2 weeks under the bed. I would come home from work (get her when she was 4) and just visit in the floor. Eventually she got less anxious (with me only). I met someone and married. She is still scared of everyone except me. I remembered the film Gorillas in the Mist when she waited, and waited for the gorillas to approach her. I sat on the floor so I would not be so big. I read things out loud so she could get used to the sound of my voice. It will take time and patience. But it will be worth it. My cat was in the bedroom under the bed for months. Good luck and many years of happiness.

It may take your new kitty a while to adjust. Keep in mind he is in a totally unfamiliar place. Let him stay in his cage for now if he feels safe there..leave the door open, but if he decides to stay there for the night bring him some food and water, and put a litter box nearby as well. You are going to have to be patient and wait until he feels comfortable even if that is 2 days or a month!

I got a kitten that was a rescued stray and she didnt get comfortable for a while. Start the cat off with just one room at a time and let it get used to that room then move it slowly into the rest of the house (over days not hours). It will eventually come out but it has been thrown into this new environment it is not used to. I kept my kitten in the smallest room of the house and then progressed her into more rooms and she is now healthy and playful and not at all shy or quiet. Good luck.

that is common when a cat gets to a new place. the best thing to do is simply leave the cage open, put a bowl of food and water somewhere else and just let him be. it could be a day or so but he'll come out.

Just leave the cage door open, leave cat food & water out for him, and when "he" is ready, he'll come out. Cats are independant anyway, but in a new home, they need more time to adjust. His growling stomach will lead the way, take my word for it, okay? Be patient.

Just give him some time cats aren't very social at first. But he will come to love you and then your gonna wish he would just go away. But if your really in a hurry you could tempt him with a toy out of the cage and then once he's out just hold him and stroke him in your lap and give him the toy of course that's his reward for coming out.

Just give him some time. He'll come out and start exploring when he's ready. It's a new environment, new smells and sounds, but he will adjust. Just make sure his food, water, and litterbox are nearby.

When you get a new cat your suppose to take it in one room for the day with food water and litter. They are shy and will need time to get use to their habitat.
