What's a favorite character from the books your students like? They'd be tickled to have their teacher come as a character from a book. With a little adapting, it could also work for the party. Of course, for the kids, there's always a Christmas tree. Wear green and put on every piece of jewelry you own, all at once. Add a few inexpensive Christmas tree ornaments, and you're all set. Then you could put most of your time and effort into a costume for Friday, if you don't think the Christmas tree would be appropriate for your friends' party. If you own nothing green, go hit the thrift stores. Halloween stuff is pretty much gone by now, but no one is touching the green clothes!

I'm an elementary teacher, and I'm dressing up as an elementary teacher. You know who I'm talking about- the lady who wears denim jumpers with wooden apple buttons over an unflattering turtle neck. An oversized bow in your hair and some Halloween earrings oughta do the trick. Be sure to wear support hose and flats that day. Don't overdo the actual Halloween aspect of it though, because chances are your coworkers are going all out like they normally do on Halloween, and you don't want to come across as making fun of them.
Or you could dress up like a calculator or something.

This year pirates are in. Put a patch over one eye, a scarf over your hair, make a cutlass out of cardboard and foil. Do you own a vest? That would help. Ask some of the other teachers if you can raid their wardrobes for ideas. Threaten to keelhaul the kids if they do not do their work.

The dads really liked it when my son's first grade teacher dressed up like a black cat. She wore all black, and stuck on a tail and a pair of ears. Probably cost two dollars for the ears and the tails, and people are still talking about it four years later!

Theme is "ready for bed."
Wear a flannel nightgown, terry bathrobe, cold cream smeared on your face, hair in curlers, fuzzy animal slippers and carrying a teddy bear. The upside to this is that you will be able to wear your "costume" for the rest of the year and beyond!

Buy a pumpkin trash bag and stuff it full of anything. Make holes for legs and arms and wear black or green pants and shirt underneath. Turtle necks work really well.
