they cancelled my car insurance, which I was going to do anyway, but they're reporting it, which means I'll have a suspended license. I have no problem turning in my plate to avoid any hassles, but how do I do it from Illinois? Can I turn it in here? Also, after I turn it in, will I have to call someone and tell them to avoid suspension, or will it automatically show up in their computer system?

Obviously you didn't bother to call your insurance and cancel, or they wouldn't have reported you for non-pay and had your license suspended. Pick up the phone, call the insurance carrier, explain the car isn't working, and ask if they can help you.

My son moved back and forth to Florida several times and he has all of his Florida plates here at home! NYS was a real stickler about turning them in but Florida never bothered him. He has his NYS license and as far as I know it's valid. Never heard him complain about it. I do know he always stayed on top of his insurance and didn't allow it to lapse because NYS will cancel everything on you without insurance!
