When I try to format from the cmd line it says that " Format cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Format may run if this volume is dismounted first. All opened handles to this volume would then be lost".

It then gives me an option to do a "forced dismount y/n" I select yes and the message is... "Cannot lock the drive. the volume is still in use" How do I get my pc reformated now?

You cannot format the drive that Windows is installed on from Within windows. If this is a 98/Me computer, download a boot disk from www.bootdisk.com and use that (format should be on it). Otherwise, boot your computer to the Windows CD and format from within Windows Setup.

Man you really need to go purchase a Windows disk and do it like that. I knew that crap they gave you in the other post about how to format by using the cmd would noit work. You need to go to and do it from a bootdisk outside from windows.
