If you have wide hips and a narrow bust then you're likely a pear shaped individual. If you have a large bust a skinny waist and large hips you're curvy. Think of the ideal woman, "36-24-36" 36 bust, 24 waist, 36 hips. I think, well in the media beautiful women are either just plain skinny or curvy, not "pear shaped". Just turn on the TV and you'll see.

I'd say that you are 'pear' if your hips are bigger than your bust.
If your bust is big enough to give you a curve to your waist i guess you're curvy!
Think of the shapes involved and try having a look at a photo of yourself to see which you are - or ask someone you trust.

If your waist is bigger around than your hips then you have an apple shape, if your hips are bigger around than your waist, then you have a pear shape. If it is not instantly obvious by looking in the mirror, here is how to find out for sure.
Using a cloth tape measure, measure your waist at the level of your belly button and your hips at their widest point. Make sure you place the tape measure directly on your skin, do not measure over your clothes. Make the tape snug on your skin, but don't pinch the skin together.
To insure accuracy, measure your waist and your hips 3 times each and get the average of the 3 measurements for both your waist and your hips.
To determine your waist-to-hip ratio, divide the average waist measurement by the average hip measurement. (average waist measurement ÷ average hip measurement = (?)
FOR MEN: If the ratio is less than 1, a hip and leg fat storage pattern (pear shape) is indicated. If the ratio is 1 or greater, an abdominal storage pattern (apple shape) is indicated.
FOR WOMEN: If the ratio is 0.8 or less, a hip and leg pattern (pear shape) is indicated. If the ratio is greater than 0.8, an abdominal storage pattern (apple shape) is indicated.

The two types are pear and apple:
Pear means you carry fat on your hips, thighs, and butt.
Apple means more fat is carried on the waist, chest, and abdomen.
I can't really think of any fact to back that up. That's just how it goes. If you gain weight and it seems to go to your lower half, then you're pear. If it goes to your top half more, you're apple.

if your body is in proposition to measurements that are related to your size you are curvy if you are bigger on the hips and botton measurements, to your top size you are pear shaped. however i suppose you can be pear shaped and still be shapely.

You need to find your waist to hip ratio. You do this by dividing your waist measurement by your hips measurement. If it is less than 0.8, then you are pear shaped. HTH : )
