If price doesn't matter, get a Nikon D80 or even a D200 and a good lens and use it in "P mode while you learn more about photography. If that's too steep for your budget or your learning curve, get a Nikon D50. It has a few "consumer friendly" automatic modes, but still offers total photographic control when you are ready to take charge. Get a "decent" lens, such as their Nikkor AF-S 18-70 f/3.5-4.5G ED DX lens and not the "kit" lens. This pair will cost you less than $1,000 and you will be very happy with it. If you want more lenses for the same money, you can get this camera with two "kit" lenses that are decent, but not as good for the long haul as the one I mentioned. When you are ready to add lenses, the sky is the limit with Nikon. Get a 1 GB memory card, such as the Sandisk "Ultra" for decent write speed. You can get these in the $30 range. An "Extreme" is faster, but I doubt anyone would notice the difference except a pro.
Someone else wil undoubtedly recommend a similar Canon camera and I will not dispute that choice. I know Nikons and someone else knows Canons. Both are excellent cameras and you will never outgrow their system offerings.

I don't have any digitals and probably will not get one any time soon.
You learn photography by having to make decisions by yourself, not by having some compuer make the decisions for you. Therefore, I would suggest any manual 35mm SLR wher eyou have to set the f stops and the shutter speeds by your self in order to understand the relationships that you need to know. Most of the manual camera will have built in light meters, but I bypass those and use a hand held meter. Auto focus is bad because you might now want the camera focused directly on what you are taking, but rather something else in the frame.
I have only been doing this for 50 years.

It all depends on what you want out of it and how much you can afford. Right now the best brands are Canon and Nikkon, Sony come very far. For Canon go fro SD 450 or 650: somewhat around $ 200-300. Nikkon doesn't a very good price range but you have to make those decision.
Good Luck

I recommend a digital SLR if you really want to get into photography. The least expensive DSLRs are the Nikon D50 and Canon Digital Rebel XT (both are both excellent cameras).
Here's the best article I've read in the past few years on the topic of different types of digital cameras, hopefully you'll find it useful:

I got a 5.0 Mega pixel Kodak Easy Share 2 Years ago. "EASY-SHARE" it's name says it all- not one time have I had to pick up the manual to figure out how to work it, not once. I have never had a problem with it either. It wasn't really expensive either ($300.00) and the pictures are of great quality.
If you want a regular 35MM, I prefer a Nikon FG series-they are nice and also easy to operate.

pentax has a very affordable slr, the 100d, that has some great features. the great thing about it is that it'll take just about every pentax lens ever made including some really nice manual focus lenses that you can get really cheap on eBay or even at your local camera store.
