I dont know about your year... but my '99 had the t-case go out and the front differential. Cost me about $2k to fix it all. I have heard a lot of things about them having problems, but again i dont know about ZJ's (93-98).

i have had exactly 2 transfer cases broken one was a select trac that the owners son [a weight lifter] pulled into low range while in 2wd [twisted the selector shaft and was fixable the other was also select trac also [little rubber plug came out ] and the oil leaked out and they drove it until it sized up there was nothing left, they bought a new t-case.
sometimes the chain stretches to the point that it jumps it is fairly easy to replace in most boxes. as for is this your problem, are bad sounds coming from it? will the truck move? is low range available? what is the level and condition of the fluid?check the rear differential [spider gears may be broken] good luck i hope for inexpensive repair.

is it all wheel/full time 4 wheel drive? have you replace a tire or 2? if so you burnt up the t/c. awd vehicles wheels have to spin at the same speed all 4 tires must be replaced. quick way to check, get chalk make an arrow on each tire pionting to the ground. then have some one drive it slowly about 20 ft and stop with the arrow pionting down, at least one wheel. look at the chalk marks, are they all pointing down in the same position? of not you have different size tires physically. just being an 1/8 th inch off in tread can do it.
