it is part of the muslim faith for both men and women to be modest. for women, dressing modestly and covering the body except for face, hands and feet protects them from being treated as sex objects in public.

If men are being honest, when they see a woman in a tight skimpy dress with plenty of cleavage, they will not be looking at her personality. This applies equally whether the woman is a "supermodel" or sporting a "muffin top".

Nuns dress modestly also for the same reasons and christian women are also required (by Paul) to cover their hair.

1 corinthians 11 (NIV):
3Now I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God. 4Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head. 5And every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head—it is just as though her head were shaved. 6If a woman does not cover her head, she should have her hair cut off; and if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut or shaved off, she should cover her head. 7A man ought not to cover his head,[b] since he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man. 8For man did not come from woman, but woman from man; 9neither was man created for woman, but woman for man. 10For this reason, and because of the angels, the woman ought to have a sign of authority on her head.

Its FUNNY how majority of those answering this question are not muslims, muslim women, nor do they wear veils...when this question asks for reasons why muslim women choose to wear veils!

Must be answering out of hatred and ignorance.

They wear veils out of modesty and to demand respect. To be treated based on thair capabilities and intelligence, not on their looks, not as sex objects.

Muslim men also have to cover up. Not just muslim women. The men have to cover the area from their stomach to their knees.

Civilizations have norms and rules.

People from the stone age, or those from certain present indigenous tribes might ask you, from the western society....why do you wear clothes, why do you cover up, why dont you run around naked? I think you would give the same answer. MODESTY.

Stop forcing people to live or dress the way you do. Please open up your mind.

Liberal ones do choose out. seek for Didem Kinali. edit the Koran says women each and every physique is suppsoed to dress modestly and the hadiths and Islamic tradtion translate that into hajabs and burkas besides the indisputable fact that modernist liberal types do no longer persist with the prescriptions and tradtions of Islam to the letter and subsequently do no longer positioned on them. some Muslim worldwide places like Saudia Arabia have regulations that require women human beings to positioned on burkhas besides the indisputable fact that extremely some do no longer, working example Egypt. Didem Kinali- btw in case you probably did no longer seek for up is a abdomen dancer on a Turkish TVshow and is very warm.

Women DO NOT *HAVE * to wear a veil. It is recommended in Islam that women are covered, and pious Muslim women do this willingly, NOT because they are told to by their men. I am marrying a Muslim man, and I am not required to convert or to practice Hijab (if you don't know the meaning, look it up...) Wearing a veil shows one's modesty and devotion to God.

They have taken the "dress modestly" request over the top.
They claim that it is a choice - what a laugh. Fathers, husbands and especialy brothers bring mental pressure to bear. They do it to please their menfolk and because of social pressures, they are better thought of if they do wear a veil.
If I was an ordinary man I would be so insulted that this person has to cover up completely because she thinks I can't keep my
eyes or hands off her;

Never seen so many veil questions in me life.
Still it makes a change from "what is the meaning of life".

The veil is worn because their blokes are insecure.
We know that muhammad was well paranoid.
The women are brainwashed into thinking they doing it for the fictitious allah & modesty.
I dont mind but not that one with the eyeholes, thats plain scary.
If you read this link it tells of privacy needed when going to the call of nature and the veil was thought of :)

It is simply tradition passed on from generation to generation! When a muslim man and a woman are in the bedroom, the veil ought to disappear with undressing other clothes!

A viel is a type of clothes when a woman covers all of her body except for the face and the hands (not arms, only hand fistis).
Some women wear it becuz they're convinced that it's for the best (for protecting them) [they believe that showing their body will make the opposit sex want them more and many raping and killing may happen in society, and some of them believe that only their husbands should see their bodies and it's better for both sides] and some people wear it becuz it's a part of their country's traditions and customs.

they wear a veil (Khimar) for modesty, privacy, and morality. in their holy book called the Qu'ran, it is stated in chapter 24 verses 27 to 31 ..."And tell the believing women to restrain their eyes and to guard their private parts and to display of their ornaments only those [which are worn on limbs] which are normally revealed and to draw their khumūr over their bosoms. They should not reveal their ornaments to anyone save their husbands or their fathers or their husbands’ fathers or their sons or their husbands’ sons or their brothers or their brothers’ sons or their sisters’ sons or other women of acquaintance or their slaves or the subservient male servants who are not attracted to women or children who have no awareness of the hidden aspects of women. They should [also] not stamp their feet in order to draw attention to their hidden ornaments. Believers turn to Allah in repentance that you may prosper."
