Evidently it was the brushwork, some of which has not been figured out to date.

Da vinci was a master of sfmuato or smokiness which is evident in the Mona Lisa; the hazy quality to the background. But his real genius can be seen in the slight discrepancies which make the painting seem slightly off. The background horizon is slightly higher on one side. her eyes appear as if she was facing you head on but her head is slightly turned away, and the image is not perfectly rectangular.
In a way these odd moments move you into the painting. It is as if you were still standing to the side of the art, you don't see the rectangle as true because it is as if you were at an oblique angle. Perhaps here head seems turned because you are not in front of her which makes sense if her eyes are straightforward. Of course you are standing in front of her but this subtle second reading draws you in to try and resolve the problems.

a good modern parallel using distortion this way to draw you in is the climax scene in "Good fellas" when Robert Deniro an Ray Liotta are at a cafe and though they are talking about one thing, underneath you feel something has/is happening between them. They stay the same distance from each other on the screen but the background seems to readjust itself. Scorsese is moving the camera further away and using the zoom lens at the same time to appear as close as always but adding the distortion of a zoom lens.

People used to look at paintings as a form of entertainment and spend an evening looking at one work of art. The distorting effects make you feel as if "something is happening!" The same way the world melts away when you see your lover's face, or time will seem to slow during a car accident. It is what makes the Mona Lisa seem important, that she distorts the world around her in a subtle belivable way.

The beauty of art is in the eye of the beholder, be it Mona Lisa or modern things. Many people find her smile mysterious because, if you look, she seems to be between contemplation, a feeling of "I really don't want to do this, but I'll do it for you.", and "I'll briefly smile if I have to.".

It just appears that from wherever you're looking at her, whatever position, her eyes seem to follow you. Her smile does seem to be mysterious, as if she's hiding a naughty secret that only the painter knows;-)
