what kind of bait should I use?

in the late summer when the water is warm and the best bait is live fish like mackerel

It really depends on waht type of fishing you are planning to do. In the Long Beach area you could surf fish year around using Gulp, mussles, ghost shrimp, or sand crabs. Or, you could go on any of the local coastal boats...and right now you'd probably get mackeral, bonita, yellowtail, or a variety of bottom fish. There are several landings in the area that can be contacted for schedules and prices.You can fish from the piers for about the same things as you would get from the shore. Lobster season is open now. And, within a short distance from LB there are several lakes and rivers with trout, bass, catfish, etc.
