There are several stages to sleep that are explained in detail on various websites...if you key in 'stages of sleep' into a search engine, you will come up with the info. you are looking for. Basically, we start out going to sleep in the first stage and then move in and out of deeper sleep through the night in cycles that last about 90 minutes. In the parts of these cycles that are not as deep, it is easier to awaken naturally. When we hit the lighter sleep cycles, after we are rested, we wake up.
