First, I am a smoker. Have smoked for all of my adult life. I have tried and failed at quitting dozens of times.

Do I believe smoking in public places should be banned? Yes I do. We all know how harmful it is not only to us but to others as well. We have one planet and no matter where the smoker lights up, that pollution is affecting our ONE planet. There is no safe place to smoke. The act itself is smelly, intolerable and repulsive to the non-smoker. And believe it or not, the times I quite, I was fully aware of how awful my clothes smelled - and how awful other smokers smelled.

I believe smoking should be outlawed. Maybe cold turkey time in a jail cell will finally cure me of this affliction!

I just quit smoking in July and I think that smoking shouldn't be banned in public places that are outside, when I was a smoker I found that non smokers were really rude and inconsiderate to smokers, we are all people still. Its almost like racism, but a little different. I don't think that smokers should purposely blow it at you either though. I think when we smoked it didn't matter so much, but now we're not smokers we are more sensitive to it.

Public smoking, indoors, has been banned in most places in my area- and I am happy about it. No more restaurant food tasting like cigarette butts, or coughing while I am shopping. And nobody has the right to blow smoke at me- or anyone who doesn't puff away. I understand smoking is an addiction. But if people are going to feed that dependency, they need to do it in a respectful manner- outdoors, away from entrances, and away from non-smokers.

It's not fair for smokers to blow smoke towards us. We'll get second-hand smoke and a lot of people die from it! I hate it how whenever I go to the mall or something, there's always smokers outside blowing smoke in my face. It's rude. I hate people who smell like ashtrays.

What makes non smokers think that they have more rights than smokers? why don't we have all the non-smokers walk around in a space suit so that we don't have to taint them. I quit 6 years ago but don't acting like "well I did it so you should to". This topic bothers me because when there's no smokers left then who do you go after?

I don`t think it should be banned but smokers should show consideration not to blow smoke towards people etc. I think you have the right to be intolerant if you want to just like I have the right to smoke.

Yes. Especially in the work place. We have some discretion on where we go for food or entertainment, but very little when it comes to where we work. I am glad to see more and more places(especially) restaurants ban smoking. It is a health risk to the rest of us. I am glad you quit. I have never tried. It must have been hard after 16 years.

No it should not.

I don't smoke, nor does it particularly appeal to me, but I really don't care what other people do with their lives. If they want to smoke, let them smoke until their lungs turn to dust...

It's not fair that they can't already go to a bunch of restaurants or hotels, but at least that is somewhat understandable since those are confined places. But if smokers want to light up outside... I see no reason why they shouldn't, the smoke dissipates as soon as they exhale. If you walk past a smoker smoking, you are NOT going to die. So hold your breath, or leave.

Yes it should.
There should be designated smoking areas outside for them to smoke and not near the entrances to the building.
I, too , was a smoker. I pack a day for about 36 years.
I quit about 6 years ago but not soon enough. I have COPD. (Chronic Obstructive Pulomnary Disease)
Now, I cannot tolerate smoke of any kind.
and the sad thing is, I did it to myself........and so are those who continue to smoke.

where I used to live the city banned smoking in all public places. It has been in effect for a few years now and it is a wonderful thing to have.
At the place where I live now, public smoking is banned except for some bars and casino places. But those will all have to butt out starting in 2008. They say it will hurt the tourist industry.
I say it's a good thing. Can't stand smoke around me at any time, so I am all for it.
And yes, it can and does work! Public ban on smoking is a great idea.
You want to smoke, do it in your own home....if you dare. Stink up your own place and not the publics.
