It is a well-known fact that the Marines take human beings, remove their soul, and then install programming to make a Marine.

Though it is a brief question, its answer is complex. However, if I were to simplify the rationality, or lack thereof, of why your nephew would be compelled to go to Iraq it would be rooted in three things:
1. A longing for purpose which the civilian world has not accorded him
2. A glorification, by the Marines, concerning the exploits of war and how “lofty” the enterprise is.
3. Misguided sense of patriotism, which for the Marines and other military outfits is synonymous with blind obedience to the foreign policy objectives of the people in power.

Its not brainwashing, its instilling spirit, Honor, pride in your country and in the Marine Corps. See most people who join, have no idea what they are capable of and the corps brings it out.
Used to, when a parade went by the people would stand when the flag went by, they dont do that now, the could care less, because they have had life pretty easy for many years and didnt have to make the sacrifice our fore fathers did during WW l and WW ll.
The older generation realize freedom isnt free and was bought and paid for in blood. The blood of our service men who defended the freedoms we have today.
There is an old saying and its true, " Once a Marine, Always a Marine." My father in law served in China after WW ll, and was still a Marine at heart.

He isn't brainwashed. Maybe you should ask your Marine nephew why he joined the military. It probably isn't so much that he wants to go to Iraq, but that he feels that's a way to fulfill his goal in being a Marine. Some people truly do join the military to support our country. Maybe your nephew is one of them.

Because the Marine corps goal in boot camp is to break them down, and then build them back up and make them tougher, angrier and more psychopathic than before.
The Marines make their recruit think "You ARE going to Iraq, and you WILL kill people, and you WILL enjoy it, cause that's your new job."
The Army makes their recruits think "You will go to Iraq, and it's you're job to protect your freedoms. So learn how to protect yourself and your fellow soldiers".
The Airforce make their recruits think "Theirs a slim chance you could get sent to a warring country. But it's only for a couple of months and we're really sorry about the inconvience."
The Navy makes their recruits think "Keeping the deck swabbed is the only thing you have to worry about. Oh, and keep an eye out for tiny boats floating to close to our ships"
Your newphew joined to wrong service. But I am proud of what the marines do for us in Iraq and without even thinking twice. Of course, that's what get them in trouble sometimes.

I'll make this simple for you.
Emagine training for a marathon. If you trained for it 24/7, and then didnt get to go, wouldn't you feel a little cheated?
Now trade marathon for war.... Does it make sense now?

With the President of the US saying that anyone who votes democrat or wants out of the war is unpatriotic, how can you blame him for wanting to go. His own president is calling him a traitor if he doesn't want to go. Its his decision just support and write him often, if he goes, and wish him luck and tell him to keep his head down.
