I usually don't allign myself with conservative politics, but when I see all these people on the street with their signs saying, "Honk if you want to bring our troops home" it really makes me fed up with my fellow liberals. So I ask you, what would actually happen if tomorrow, Iraqis woke up and there wasn't a single American in their country? Would things get better? Would they get worse? I would especially like to hear from anyone currently living in the Middle East, as I am particularly curious as to your opinions.

Don't get me wrong, I want our troops home as soon as humanly possible.

I think it's a given that bringing the troops home is the best thing for America, but what is the best thing for Iraq?

Although immediate withdrawal would be a catastrophe, our current 'stay the course' policy is leading to an equal collapse of government, civil war and total lack of safety for civilians. One of the primary differences that would likely to occur if we left would be a push by Iran to put a puppet government into Iraq. If we leave an unstable country, outside forces will step in.
Because a great effort has been put forth to deceive the American public into believing that things are going well in Iraq - remember the 'why doesn't the liberal press tell the GOOD stories' propaganda that has been pumped out, an honest discussion of possible corrective policies and government actions is nearly impossible. No matter which party gains the upper hand in the next election - the American people will hold them accountable for their actions, or failure to make corrective actions in Iraq.
Also note that some Republicans, observing the sneering at those in the Democratic party who call for 'cut-and-run' are calling for 'NOTIFY-AND-WALK'.
CBS: ""In a not so subtle dig at Mr. Bush's "cut and run" charges toward Democrats, his former No. 2 at the State Department, Richard Armitage, says the United States should "notify and walk," reports CBS News White House correspondent Jim Axelrod. ""

The civil war would continue unabated, and not much would be different. But our troops have no business there in the first place, just as we have no business imposing ourselves on any other country ruled by an evil despot under a dictatorship.
If Bush really wants to bring democracy to the world, why don't we invade all the other countries ruled by madmen? Because the other countries have no easily-accessible OIL.
If Bush really believes we'll withdraw from Iraq by 2009, why is the United States building the largest embassy in the world on a 104-acre site in downtown Baghdad, overlooking the puppet Iraqi government which Bush and Cheney installed? Because the U.S.A. will be in Iraq until it has sucked every drop of OIL out of Iraq's sands.
Why will Bush invade Iran before the spring of 2007? Because the U.S. business interests want all those rich fields of easily-accessible OIL.
Yes, I think things would eventually get better in Iraq if the U.S. wasn't there. Eventually, they could resolve their differences - particularly if they had their OIL to be used as a economic stalwart with which to prop up the nation's economy and providing unity and equality to all. -RKO-

If we were to pull our troops out right now, then the first thing is we'd be telling the whole world that we can't finish anymore. We have become weak and we are ripe for attacks. I fear for our troop over there don't get me wrong, but I think we need to stay there to finish this. If we come home then the terrorists that are here will be able to get the intelligence that they have been lacking to carry out a attack in this country. Every time they plan some type of attack here since 9-11 we have stopped them. We leave Iraq then they will regroup like nothing ever before and will carry out attacks here. I don't want to see anything like that awful day again here in this country. I am sick of these democrates not supporting our troops by threatening to withhold money if Bush doesn't set a time table. If we do that then they wait till that day and when we leave they attack us hard and strong. We need to work together, but the real evil empire in this nation(DEMS notice they are the donkey) they just won't stop trying to scare the people in this nation into thinking that we are in more danger when in FACT nothing has happened here since 9-11.

I don't know anyone who doesn't want our troops to come home. But at what cost?
When we left Vietnam, we sacrificed our credibility as a super power. We did not regain that credibility until the first Iraq war.
The biggest argument to leave Vietnam was that even if we lost that war, the communist from that country would not invade the continental United States. This is not a view we can afford to take in this conflict. Extremist Muslims have already attacked the United States. If we give these extremists a new country that they can operate in unrestrained, there is no question they will develop new ways and strategies to attack us again.
Some things to consider;
-Is it better that terrorist are attacking our armed troops, or would it be better for them to attack our unarmed civilians?
-Even if you do not agree with us going to war or believe that terrorist were in Iraq before the war, there is no question that they are there now. And that our troops are killing them over there, rather than over here.
-In the Vietnam war, we were loosing 8,000 troops a year. In Iraq, we are loosing 800 troops a year. Every soldier's death is a tragedy, but we need the same resolve our troops have to not let their deaths be in vain.
-In Vietnam, there was a draft. In Iraq, the only troops fighting are volunteers, willing to lay down their lives for ours.
-Lets bring our troops home, but in a victory parade, not in a humiliating retreat.

well my husband is there, so my answer is biased and libral. i feel the iraqis should fight their own civil war. we should keep our troops alive and ready to fight an actual threat like north korea if need be. right now, from what ive been told first hand by the ppl there, the troops are just another reason to cause violence. i also feel that the money used to fight the "war on terror" should go to oh i dunno, finding osama, or i know this is a radical thought, but maybe the school system or other useful things that our country needs desprately. just my opinion.

Three way civil war and only the Kurds would win. But face it. That is happening right now. We leave, we can rebuild our forces. Let them slaughter each other. They are doing it now and are going to continue until they wear themselves out. No matter what we do! We could focus on finding and killing Osama, and bring some real pressure on North Korea and Iran.

All of Iraq except for the Kurds would rejoice to be free of the invading American aggressors.
Sunnis &Shiites would fight for political control. So what??? Best thing about Saddam was that at least when he was in power:
Women and Christians had unbelievable freedom in education, careers, public respect, sense of security, etc.etc.
Under Saddam's rule, anyone even suspected of being an AlQaida member or some Muslim fanatic was obliterated.
and many Iraqis even TODAY still respect Saddam and want him back. He's no worse than scumbag Bush & his cronies.
The world would relax & AlQaida would lose most of its influence & power.

I guess the same thing that happened in Vietnam as far as Iraq goes but maybe here in America we could take that 4.4 billion dollars a month it is costing us and fix some of the pot holes in our roads.

Many American families would be reunited. All the fathers and mothers and sons and daughters serving in Iraq would be home safely.
Iraqi violence would continue like it always will.
We could invest some of the war money in education and welfare.
