I'll give you my answer from experience. Here's the short version, without all the details.
I was physically, emotionally and sexually abused from the age of 5 until my mother's husband left her when I was 17. I was still emotionally, and at time physically abused by my mother, but I left home as soon as I was able to.
While the rest of my family received counseling, I went into the military, and never asked for counseling there. I never saw a counsellor until last year (I'm 29). When I tried to talk to him about the abuse, he kept wanting to talk about my marriage. So, I guess I've never really talked any of it over with a professional.
When I was younger, my feelings manifested themselves in my through violence. I didn't start a fight with anyone, but I also didn't back down, so needless to say I got into a lot of fights, in school, and later as a young adult. I also had problems with the way I treated people in relationships.
I've managed to deal with this over time, and I'm no longer the angry person I was. But honestly it took me years and years to come to grips with myself.
So, I'll answer you from experience. You CAN deal with psychological pain by yourself, but it can takes years to come to grips with yourself. And some people never manage it. So, going to a therapist now, can help you do this quicker, and you'll have someone you can discuss things with, who can help you learn from any mistakes you make, and maybe help prevent you from making others.

Do you mean "deal with"? If so, no, you should get professional help and support from a group and family/friends. Psychological pain is something to go through, not wallow in, and facing it and dealing with it is the key. You do that by going to counseling and understanding there is nothing to fear because the past is the past. Often, we treat the past like the present and continue to live in it, that is what brings on more pain. Seek help and support, it will make your journey much easier.
