I know what you mean almost all of ours are used. We only have one set that we bought new. We can't afford new ones so we just take our chances. Now with bedbugs on the rise you really take your chances because even if it looks really clean you can't tell if it has bedbugs.

You don't have to buy a used mattress to get them. You can stay at a motel or someones house and if they have them chances are you might bring them home with you.

If you purchased it from somewhere like Goodwill, in most areas, there is a Public Health law that says "any used mattress sets" before they can be sold, they must be sanitized by washing and spraying with a commercial antibacterial cleaning solution.
If not...You can use an upholstery shampoo to clean the mattress. Or use a small carpet cleaner that uses hot water and use an antibacterial cleaner.

Now think of this...we stay in hotels while on vacation or business and basically sleep on used mattresses. Think they are cleaned every day? Nope. And most of the hotels don't use mattress pads the only thing between us and the mattress is the sheet. If the mattress you purchased looked clean and well cared for I would probably spray it with Lysol and forget it.
