Vaguely remember from art history class...

The artists used art to record history & to spread propaganda. "Egalitie, fraternite, liberte" was their slogan. Jacques Louis David was one of the artists I believe. They were Neoclassicists (a style of painting that was realistic but classical in its use of mythological figures & scenes to depict current events of the time).
