Mind you, they said if I get a Green Card, they will take me, but INS won't just give me a Green Card, and I'm not going to spend time trying to get one through employer sponsorship (which only can happen if I apply for a job lacking qualified Americans --- unlikely) when Alberta has the fastest growing economy of any state or province.

I think I read that 90% of Canadians live within 200 km of the U.S. border making it unnecessary for a Canadian to live and work in the U.S. to join the U.S. Army.

Also, until recently, the Canadian Army hadn't taken many casualties in Afghanistan, so it could be argued that the U.S. Army needed me more.

I'm sure the U.S. is a nice country, but so is Canada and if INS'a attitude is I should climb Mount Everest for the privilege of a Green Card, then I'd rather not bother. I'm already a mechanical engineer and boiler operator and indistinguishable from the average American, so if that's not good enough, forget it.

Also, the person mentioned the privilges Americans have. The only privilege I asked for as an American was the privilege to go to Iraq and get my legs blown off with an IED, so it's ironic that INS makes it hard for me to have this "priviledge".

If you feel so badly towards America and our rules, why don't you just join you're own damn military.

I don't know much about recruitment but I know a lot about the Army. Try calling another recruiter. Sometimes another recruiter knows something that this guy didn't. Sometimes recruiters will get a little lazy if they have already filled their quota and foreigners are harder work than citizens. The Army filled its quota this year already so they are not in too much of a hurry to dip into the foreigner pool.

My drill sergeant in basic wasn't an American Citizen and one of the guys I used to work with was from Canada. We called him "Canada" get it? Anyway, he became a helicopter pilot and one of our female Blackhawk pilots used to be a captain in the Canadian Army. I think they got in the Army because they both were in the Canadian Army. Ask a recruiter what would happen if you were prior service Canadian Army, it may help.

Lastly, you may have to wait until the Army is hurting for recruits again. Have you tried talking to a National Guard recruiter. Each state has its own Army and they have their own rules. If you get on with them you can transfer to active duty federal Army fairly easily.

Oh, and if you do get in the Army, good luck in Iraq!!

If you want to get to the american army as a canadian, then join the canadian forces. And then see if you can get into the exchange program with the american forces.

My first question would be why the heck you want to join the US army. Is it to fight in Iraq in the most unpopular war since Vietnam. Or is it to answer to the most unpopular USA President in recent history.
If that's want you want, why not just join our Canadian Army and fight in Afghanistan, the most unpopular war in Canada under Harper who is fast becoming the most unpopular Prime Minister.
You don't even have tp get a green card!!!

Follow the laws and you will have the opportunities and privileges of an American citizen. You can't be here illegally and expect to get accepted into the armed services!

Those are the rules. Those were the rules when I joined in 1975. Those were the rules when I retired in 1997. Those are the rules today.

The French have a Foreign Legion, the United States doesn't. Have you tried them?
