I'm currently faced with the same issue due to extremely high blood pressure (formerly 220/190) now under control with medication.

My Internal Medicine Doctor highly recommends combining Hypnosis because it has a higher success rate than all the available smoking cessitation drugs alone. I've tried so many methods over several years and still haven't kicked the habit. So, I've ordered the CD Hypnosis program my doctor recommends (below), and I'm using the gum.

Obviously you'll need to change your daily activities and avoid being around people who smoke for a while. Tell your friends that you're trying to quit smoking (for health reasons) to get some support and understanding. It will help to do things that keep your hands and mouth busy, and brush your teeth often. I brush my teeth almost every time I have a powerful urge to smoke (sometimes the cigarret wins). It will also help to keep your smokes in a different place, like in a different room, so you're forced to exert some effort to get them. I've resorted to keeping mine locked in the trunk of my car.

Some food for thought:
It takes 21-days to break (or make) a habit...
A craving passes in 7-minutes...

Ok, I just recently quit OCT 5th. ITS HARD AS HELL! I was a pack a day smoker for 12 years.

I used the 21mg patch for a week, then stepped down to the 14mg patch. Then on saturday OCT 14th I went out in public, saw everyone smoking. It all looked so yummy, and it seemed like EVERYONE was smoking. So I had a nervous break down and smoked one. Then I was back on the bandwagon. Today is OCT 21st, and now no patch, no nothing. I am very good with the whole not smoking issue, untill I go in public. It really is a habit I miss, but know I really need to do without.

I dont plan on starting again. The two weeks I have quit smoking has already saved me over $50, and I'm really liking that!

So good luck. It is possible, but it is a FIGHT everyday!

since you smoke that much everyday, your body got adjusted having these poisons running ur body. That's why people with more serious drug problems can actually die by quiting abruptly. You hav to take decrease your amount of cigarettes maybe every few weeks or whatever you're comfortable with. The reason why you were coughing and stuff (tryign to not smoke) was because your body was so used to having 2-5 cigarettes a day. So each week you should decrease slowly from 2-4cigarettes, then another few weeks, 2-3, then so on.

I really just suggest quitting cold turkey. Its difficult, but the patch and the gum drag the process out, cost a lot of money, and have some nasty side effects. (You haven't truly had a nightmare until you've fallen asleep with the patch on.) Some people swear by things like hypnotism and group therapy, but I think that the psychological part of it is the easy part. You don't want to smoke anymore, right? Right! So now, just get past the physical efffects of withdrawal, and you're home free.
Oh yeah, chew on sunflower seeds or blowpops or something. It helps take your mind off of things.
Good luck to you!

Get on a diabetic diet - that controls blood sugar by cutting out sugar, and other high glycemic foods from your diet, for about 2 weeks before quitting.

Stay on the diet until you have been done with smoking for 6 months, if not the rest of your life. The diet will help stop the cravings, and will help you from gaining the "stopped smoking" weight.

i can tell you how i did it. i realized that i wasnt going to quit unless i really WANTED to quit. that meant i needed to change the way i THINK about smoking. yeah, i knew it was bad for me and all that stuff, but obviously there were things i liked about it, so thats where i had to change my thinking. so i started FOCUSING on all the NEGATIVE aspects of smoking (how it tends to make me feel kind of tired, that hacking cough in the morning, the awful smell which only nonsmokers notice, how people really DONT look so cool when they smoke if you really think about it, etc...) it got to the point where i would see someone smoking and i would really see the unattractiveness of it. they usually look like sad slaves to nicotine. after awhile i started to enjoy smoking less and less. and eventually i quit. i still remember the times when smoking was enjoyable (after a good meal, whenever i drank a few beers, sitting on the porch at night, etc...) but you cant just have one ONE cigarette. well, I cant anyway. but honestly i dont miss smoking AT ALL. its been over 4 years now and ive never felt better. now that i dont smoke, i really have to say that when i am next to someone who does smoke, even if they are not smoking at the time, i can tell they are a smoker because they smell like an ashtray. disgusting. i hope this helps. just remember, its all MENTAL. good luck.
