He will talk in his own good time. 20 months is very small. When he goes to school he'll have to talk. Give him time. Some children say nothing until they are 2 or even three years old and then they come out with full sentences. It often depends on their character.

Love your name as it's my daughter in-laws also. Anyway, your child is just developing at a slower pace then your others did. All kids progress at their own rate and I'm sure all will be fine. Geez your lucky that your's is only 20 months with this problem. My youngest child is 20 years old and he is a lazy talker. Seriously though if you have concerns speak with either a doctor or a speach therapist and see that he is progressing normally if it is that upsetting to you. I'm sure that soon enough he'll be talking his head off and you'll miss the quiet days. Ha! Good luck.

He should have a decent vocab by now. I had the same problem with my youngest son. Talk to your kids' school, they may have free speech therapy available. Mine dine, and I took him once a week. I was amazed how fast it worked. My son wasn't a lazy talker, he just didn't say anything at all...two words tops, because he didn't have to...his sister and brother always seemed to know what he wanted and translated for him, lol. But after only four speech therapy sessions he was talking nonstop, it was great. Good luck!

My little boy didn't speak until he was 3 and now he is 7 i cant shut him up!!!
I saw my health visitor, read every book and he still took his time.
He might be having everything done for him so he doesn't feel the need to ask or use words. Have you had his hearing checked?
It doesn't mean he is stupid, but what he is saying sounds about right for his age don't compare him to other children his age he will talk when he is good and ready

He sounds ok to me - with a third child you find they don't have to talk as much - as you say, his siblings do his talking for him. My first child was actually a very slow speaker and ended up getting speech therapy, which was not really required. He could however walk at 10 months and got into a lot more mischief than his two younger brothers ever did.

I had a lazy talker, the problem was he was the youngest of four and so he didn’t have to ask for anything he just pointed and the other children (thinking there being helpful) got it for him without him having to ask at all, make sure your other children ask him what he wants and tell them to wait for a reply before they get anything for him. It will get better my little boy wont shut up now he’s started talking properly. Also check his hearing he may not be able to hear you properly and may have glue ear.
Good luck.

He is not lazy he just is not ready to speak yet. Some children do not say much until they feel confident of their speech. My Grandson did not speak much until he was 2 1/2. But then he started out with sentences. He just chose not to verbalize until he could do it properly. You should also remember that all children learn at their own speed.
If you are concerned by his lack of speech you could also get his hearing checked. If he cannot hear he cannot learn speech. There could be other problems but he is too young to worry about them yet.
If he is healthy in all other regards I would not worry until he was closer to 3. Talk to your pediatrician and see what he has to say.

Don't worry too much, I know that is easy for me to say!
They say that Albert Einstein didn't speak until he was 3 years old.
Anyway, remember that speech acquisition is going on all the time and as long as he is surrounded by talking, singing and conversations, then he will be absorbing it all and when he is ready, he will talk more.
However, if in 6 months he is not talking as much as other children his age, have him checked in case he has hearing loss as that is one thing that could be causing him not to speak much.
Good Luck!

Please don`t be too concerned about it.My grandson was exactly the same,in fact he was still very slow when he had his third birthday in May.He started school in September and the difference is remarkable. He has come on in leaps and bounds. He has been mixing with other children in creche since he was 10 months old so its not as if he was denied the company of other children. It`s just one of those things that happen in the "growing up" stage. As i said, please don`t worry he`ll be fine.

My son never started talking in sentences until 2 and 1/2. Now at 6 we can't get him to stop talking. Don't stress. Some boys develop language later. They are too busy moving and getting physical.
If he is not talking well by 3, then consult a pediatrician who may refer you to speech therapy.
