I'm not sure of any more specific/professional name for this process than "relaxing". Is it damaging to your hair? Is it better/worse than japanese straightening? How long does it last? What exactly does it do? Does it work well? Thank you :)

Yes, it damages both your hair and your scalp. BUT hair is pretty resiliant. I used to use a relaxer on my hair all the time - it was nice having straight hair down to the middle of my back. After a while though, the scalp damage became pretty bad and I stopped using it. Now my hair is all kinky and stuff and is no longer straight. But my scalp healed in about 2 years and with treating my hair better, my hair is softer than butter and the envy of all women - and I am a guy.

Depends on the ingredients that they use in the relaxer. No Lye products usually displayed in the African-American section of the drugstores are good for all races. Look at the one that has Olive Oil in it. Also, stay away from the Japanese straightening process. I have seen people who had this done and now they have damaged hair.
