Apparently God's plans for Saul (later Paul) were more important than whatever Saul may have wanted to do. So how does that square with God's gift of free will?

He still didn't force him to believe. He was just getting his attention. Same for Jonah

God didn't override Saul's free will;. He didn't act for Saul; God merely showed himself, as he does with many.

Saul could of gotten back on the horse, who knows maybe God would've knocked him off again.

Free will is the ability to choose. Saul chose to believe in God's plan, with a little convincing. ; )

God did not over ride Saul's freewill. When Saul was on his way to persecute Christians, he thought that he was doing God a favor. Since Saul worshiped the same God as Christians do, God steped in and redirected Saul by revealing Himself to him, so that Saul could serve God, which is what Saul wanted to do in the first place.

Jesus told Saul to go to Damascus to receive further instructions from representatives of the Church. Saul could have said,"Nah, that power that left me blind can be explained. I think I'll take a vacation instead."
Saul was not forced to go anywhere, or to believe anything. Saul did not recognize who Jesus was, and neither did Saul recognize Who he was persecuting until it was carefully spelled out for him.

What you are really saying is you are forced to believe water is wet because it rained.

Saul (Paul) was not forced to believe on the name of Christ. God appeared to him on the road to Damascus to stop him from persecuting his children and to show Saul who he really was. God does not compromise man's free will. He shows man who He is and lets man make the decision what he/she will do with Him.

There's a third part to the story:
Saul->Paul->Paul The Apostle
Simon->Peter->Conveted Peter

Paul got ensnared by another law.
Suffered from evil concupiscence.

Peter only man in Bible called Satan.
Told when(not if) thou art converted.

Those "first called Christians at Antioch",
were the likes of "Saul, Peter, Barnabas".
"Paul" withstood Peter, about Barnabas.

When you get spiritual of natural/spiritual,
there's still comparing spiritual with spiritual.

Eg: (children vs children) vs be no more childen
http://www.godshew.org/TwainShew2.htm#Childrens
http://www.godshew.org/GodShew.htm#nomorechildren

Eg: (servants vs servants) vs above a servant
http://www.godshew.org/TwainShew6.htm#Servants
http://www.godshew.org/AboveAServant.htm

When you become new of old/new,
there's still a new & dead way vs a new & living way.

Eg: New International Version vs New King James Bible
NIV leaves out grace us end -vs- NKJ leaves in grace us end

The GRACE of our Lord Jesus Christ with you all. Amen.

God just wanted to make sure Saul knew about him, he still had free will to or not to.

God did not remove free will from Saul.

Peace!

When you come into the Presence of an Almighty GOD, deep down inside of you, you Make your Decision(to Accept or not Accept)------sometimes Real Fast.

It is one of those "it has to Happen to You Things" to be able to "Understand it", then you cannot Prove it to Anybody.
But at Least, it happened to you, and Hopefully you Accepted.

That's persuasion, not force. I can get you to believe that I exist if I come by and knock you down. It doesn't mean I took away your free will to not believe in me.
