Don't blame your doctor. Very few doctors know anything about athletic training! Two things that you should look at. Your shoes and vitamin B. First the shoes. I have found that one very popular shoe has always made my knees hurt. (not to mention a brand but it rhymes with my key) It has to do with the last (the mold they use to form the shoe.) I would definitely try other shoes. BTW, the most expensive shoes are not necessarily the best, but the least expensive are almost always the worst! You should also know that although padding is important, so is support. If there is too much motion it can be very hard on the knees. The second thing. I was having trouble with my knees (at a much older age) and a friend told me to try Vitamin B supplements. I didn't see how that would help, but with the pain, I tried it and the pain went away. Though in theory, we should be able to get all the vitamins necessary from the food we eat, in reality that doesn't usually happen because of our dependence on processed foods and the likes and dislikes we develop. I might also mention that the RDA (recommended daily allowance) as determined by the government is often woefully inadequate, especially for an active person. Look for a B complex which should contain all the vitamins that are in the B family. Vitamin B is water soluble, so the danger of too much is minimal, though it can happen, so don't start taking bottles of it and if it helps it doesn't necessarily mean more would be better. Good luck to you. Hope you get past this.

i doubt it, but it could be shin splints. and that's when part of the muscle is torn off your shin. but i doubt it since she's 78. it usually happens to people in sports.
otherwise, it could be a more serious case of arthritis that her doctor thinks. so go to another doctor to see what they say. and in the mean time, tell her to take 2 advil in the morning, and 2 advil at night.

You really need to read "Stop Shin Splints" by Gary Buchenic (also available in electronic format here: http://www.stopshinsplints.org ). It's about how to permanently cure your shin splints naturally. Worked for me and for thousands of people. Good luck!

It sounds like a stress fracture to me... i know my friend had one and she went to an ART specialist (someone who works on just the muscles) THEY ARE AMAZING! and they were able to tell her without even looking at x-rays.. maybe try that!! it also might just be the muscles in her knees and shins.. good luck!

Joint pain due to arthritis and other reasons can be reduced and cured by making small changes in the diet and lifestyle of the affected person. I found the information at http://aches.in/naturalcuresarthritis.html useful.
