There are two ways
1. you subscribe to an internet service provider-this has nothing to do with a search engine-a service provider (ISP) provides you with a way to access the internet ISP's purchse airwave space that allows access to the internet then they sell it to subscribers (much like the phone company sells you phone numbers-they do not control what you say or when you use it). They provide you with phone numbers-in the case of dial-up; wireless access-satellite or the big towers you see everywhere-these are hardwired into your computer and are ALWAYS on-they are called broadband-and the speed you can do stuff on the internet is from 20 times faster to hundreds of times faster(this is the type you really need to protect from hackers);next is DSL-this is from the phone company-is broadband-and is faster still-but they have sever different speeds-each one costs different-faster is more money;and finally,cable-this is from your TV cable companies-broadband again---this sums up the "normal" methods--anything labeled "broadband" needs special protection from hacking-decent protection software is available free on the internet-you can download. Ther are several less common methods to log onto the internet. With all the above you subscribe to which ever one you choose or which one is available (for example: I live out in the country and only had dial-up until six months ago-I now have wireless (the type with the tower); they then give you a user name (this will be your e-mail address-this has to be something of your choosing,BUT it can not be something someone else has allready chosen. and a password of your choosing. THIS allows you to log onto the internet.

Ther are various other types available-much smaller-limited areas, etc. Ther is also wifi-this is what you see/hear about at "cyber cafes" "hot spots" etc. these are places that have subscribed to broadband-wireless-very high speed-and offer the internet to their customers-either free or for a price- to people with laptop computers that are sit up for this wirlesss service-then some power companies are offering internet service through your house wireing.

cost:
dial-up--$8 to 15 per month--plus long distance phone charges if they apply-but in this day allmost never apply-quite slow and frustating connect speed=up to 56K
wireless--$50 to 100 per month-broadband-connect speed=500K up to 1.5meg.
DSL--$14.95 up to 50 per month-depending on area and speed-broadband speed=500K up to meg
cable--$25 to 50 depending on package you choose and area-broadband-speed=around 3meg

wifi--at "hotspots"-sold by the minute or hour-broadband-speed=up to 54megs.
