Since the beginning of human time, there has been gods and religion. Religious wars have drawn the very borders of most countries. Religion kept people down and subservient, determined the growth of the human population by making birth control a sin and ruled people by fear. It has been big business since the idea of tithing and "giving to the church to buy a ticket to heaven" became de rigueur or fashionable. So many people need to be led by a church that I have to say that religion has shaped HUMAN history more than science.

I would have to say religion for the simple fact that so much of science is all about trying to prove or disprove religion. If religion did not have such an impact as that then perhaps science would have been in the lead. Can the borg assimilate that?

The two go hand in hand. Religion has spent tremendous amount of effort quashing free thinking and scientific research. Think of Galileo and Copernicus; how many with an interest in science were afraid to pursue it for fear of being killed by the church? Without the repression and interference of religion, science might well have flourished and grown long before it did.

That is a tough question. I am going to say religion because of it's influence in every century prior to the 19th century. Today, it is definitely science.
