The active ingredient in Benadryl is diphenhydramine. Diphenhydramine usually doesn't cause anxiety. In fact, it is often given to agitated patients to help calm them, or to patients who are having trouble getting to sleep. It is possible that your husband has a bad reaction to it, but it's also possible that he's anxious about whatever caused him to need it.
