I am in the market of buying a new home. And I wanted to know which was better. I think some brick homes may have gotten siding added to them. But does anyone know when siding frirst came on the market? I live in Missouri so strong winds and stroms are my only problem. Can someone give me a good solid answer so that I can make up my mind to make my purchase. Also this is my first time buying a home. What things should I look for...advice you give will be helpful. Thanks

99% of all siding used now is vinyl, and offers a low cost, low maintenance solution to cosmetic problems with brick that maybe are not as cost effective as pointing or powerwashing...BUT..a well maintained brick exterior is all-ways desirable to siding, for all the reasons listed so far, plus it will add to the value. Most of the important things to keep in mind when buying a new home are basically common sense, and consider the fact that 90% of the cost of most remodeling projects revolve around plumbing and/or electrical issues, so keep that in mind when looking at 'good deals' or 'fixer uppers'. I also suggest when you seriously consider a certain property to purchase, do some research..go to the local survey office, check for zoning, easements, etc.. that might effect that property..

siding came after brick, brick has been around a lot longer. brick holds the heat better and is more resistant in wind. sliding if underneath has no insulation has no heat retention. i to live in Missouri and when you factor in the cost of a brick home compared to a home with siding. the few thousand you may pay in difference, in the long run will be saved by the lower cost of heating siding started appearing in the market in the late fifty's/ siding can be damaged by a ball hitting it, etc so if going to have kids that's something to consider also.

Vinyl, wood, and composite sidings are all super lame. If you want siding, get Hardie Board or Hardie Plank siding which are cement-based products. It costs 1.5 to 2x as much as the cheap stuff but lasts 10x longer. Brick siding is less durable than Hardie, but it is still very durable and looks MUCH better than any of the other options I mentioned. I recommend 100% brick if you can afford it. Contractors will generally give you free estimates, so just get an estimate. My *guess* is $9000 for vinyl, $13000 for Hardie, and $20000 for brick.

I strongly suggest you opt for a brick home. They retain value and add equity to your home, even if the brick isn't the prettiest. Aluminum siding is noisy and can ding easily although it can be painted. Vinyl is inexpensive but can crack easily in cold weather and it does fade in uv light. There was a reason the big bad wolf couldn't take the brick house down!

It really depends on your taste. Siding nowadays is of far better quality than when it was first invented. Brick is low-mainenance, usually. But brick tends to look tacky when painted.

On the other hand, siding would probably be easier to remove if you need to fix something else with your house, and probably easier to paint and have it look good.

As a first time buyer we bought a sided ranch home.

When we bought our second home it was brick ranch. Our insurance rates were lower because the home is made of brick.

Our heating bills are also lower.

Additionally, I think brick homes retain their value better, if you ever needed to sell the home.

Brick is alot better than siding. It lasts longer, you won't have problems with termites, the cost of heat and airconditioning is lower, and there's very little maintenance. Besides the fact that i think it looks better. Good luck to you!!

Hire a local home inspector for about $150 and up. I could tell you my opinion, but i live in N.C. and our weather is alot different. The inspector will check for termites , structural damage and all different kinds of areas of the house.
