There are alot of ways to do it. The way that I like to use is;
mix drywall mud with regular latex primer just keep adding primer to mud while slowly mixing it together when it gets to a consistency that I can roll I just put mixture in a roller pan and use a heavy nap roller to roll it on to walls.
Don't worry about covering every square inch of the wall. Because when you paint it the spots that don't have mud on them will just add to the look.And the primer in the mixture will make it easier to paint.
Once you do a little you'll get the hang of it and then you can experiment with what looks best to you

There are many different techniques for texturing, I suggest you go to home depot where there are valuable resources for that and other projects as well. Most of the commercial 'Mud' mixtures are water based, and most professionals will use water to mix the product prior to application.. There are several reasons for this, drying time, type of texture, application process, and environmental considerations..for instance, if I have a time consuming texture to complete on a hot day, I might add more water so as I have more time to work with the mud before it sets up...

STOMP & DRAG
MIX IT UP W/ WATER TO A LITTLE THICKER THAN CAKE BATTER, DIP YOUR "STOMP" BRUSH, STOMP IT ON THE WALL, LET IT DRY A BIT, & DRAG IT DOWN WITH A WIDE BLADE ( PAINTERS SHIELD, I'VE SEEN USED ) KNIFE. LOOKS LIKE INSIDE STUCCO!
